I've owned a few Faded Studios, nice guitars. I picked up a 2012 LPJ yesterday and other than the silly black pickup covers I don't see any difference between it and a Faded Studio. Am I missing something?

Well, most of the Faded's had BurstBuckers and similar mainline Gibson Pickups. The LPJs use pickups used on no other line (read likely cheaper )

personally, I'd rather have a LPJ over a faded. 490/98 pups, big maple neck, the finish is a wash imo.

It's got the black keys. I only said 2012 because that's what came back from The Guitar Dater Project site, Nov 2012. I do really like it but have been thinking about giving it a rattle can black paint job. I recently had a black Special faded that had been worn smooth/shiny and it looked great IMO.

Depends on the LPJ year doesn't it? Current ones, and for awhile don't use 490/498s.
2014 used 1961 Zebra Coil (Alnico V) http://www.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/2014/LPJ.aspx

Older Faded Studios had 50s necks, even older, no weight relief. MOST had full body width.

Point is LPJ and Faded Studio isn't the same guitar.
Except for the pinkish plastic, that is a good year for Trads (no weight relief, big neck, '59 RI pickups, etc.) and the 2-P90 LP Melody Maker with a fat neck (always wanted one of those). I love how they refer to the pots as "non-linear", why not just say audio?.

2013 LPJ Pro also had coil tap 490T/490R pickups with chrome covers and a maple top. I have one in desert burst (the only Pros with a maple top).

LPJ = Maple neck
Studio Faded = Hog neck

Pickups may vary on Studios, but I know for ceatain it's 490/498 on '13 LPJs (with black covers, black keys and black nut), 61 pickups on 2014, no covers or unnecessary blackness.

My 13 LPJ is 1/4" thinner than the Trad, but the neck is almost as thick. Great bang for the buck would be an understatement.

If you ran a search for "I love my LPJ" I think you'd get more hits than one would be led to believe. I know I've said it more than a handful of times on this forum.

Here's my 2013 Gold Top with a BB3 in the bridge and an Epi somethingorother in the neck (which I gotta do something about soon), next to a Junior/Special that went on to further adventures.

It has the best neck I have in my corral.

How about shining up the finish? The back of the neck is nice and shiny and the forearm area is getting that way but of course the rest of the top is the normal dull cherry color. It'd look a LOT better if I could shine it up some. Ideas?

Gibson w/ a gig bag. I hate to see that. I have a faded Gibson and it also came with a gig bag (TKL). Hoping to get a hard case for it one day.
