Look at the history from how certain groups improved the quality of life on this planet. The American white man, the guy every one points the finger at or gives the finger to. Every stinken new thing from medicine to transportation to communication was done by a white American. The work done in other nations depended on the discovery that took place here.
I will now say we because I am a white American man and very proud of the stuff we did. I was in Europe trying to make a phone call, they did laugh at me. Stupid American, I did not understand their coins and they kept coming back. There would not be a phone in France if a silly American did not connect the wires and run a cable under the Atlantic. Many less French kids in wheel chairs because of a guy that had a lab not far from my old office. Dr Sulks work freed so many from that curse polio. The rest of the world has done very little, they wait for us. The golden goose with a lot of life saving eggs. That Italian chap did not invent the radio. He was close but is work was incomplete. Einstein had a bunch of theories that don't pan out under close examination. Few stupid sayings and could not even cross a busy street. His wife did his math and was much better educated. Nothing wrong with being us, I think a lot better. We get the new iPhone faster.

I don't feel the American Justice System treats anyone equally who isn't rich.

Justice is bought by those who can afford it. Much like medical care.

Quoted for the lucid truth it is.

As for the generation that spawned hippies:

The free love movement preaches abstinence.

Turn on, tune in, and drop out wages the war on drugs.

The peace movement has brought us a perpetual state of war on ideologies of otherness.

Way to go Summer of Love!

..and the beat goes on..

Success and respect are easier to get when you resemble the majority. It's better now, but thinking everyone starts out equal is a little naïve or self-serving. Over time, people who were indentured servants, treated like crap, etc.. joined the majority.

Do you really think kids from the hood are on the same life trajectory as those with trust funds? of course not. Hood kids can work hard and succeed. My point is: There's a huge difference between being born on second base and hitting a double.

^ You do realize Salk's parents were immigrants.

We all are! I was born in Ireland , a bunch of mutts with a back bone !

I asked my good friend Leroy McGillicuddy if he knew how he got his last name. He said it was certain it was the name of his Momma's baby daddy.

Dad's side of my family came from the province of Cosenza in the Calabria region, small town..Rose

Mom side came from Province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region..

Her mother..(my Grandma)...I found out many years later..was born in Blairsville Penn. Her oldest brother was murdered because he was named foreman at a mine. The next day the found him hanged.
They went back to Italy..she married a man who wanted to come here after WWI..and was a decorated soldier from US and Brits for leading lost soldiers against Germans and fighting in the mountains he knew as he lived there south of Rome

Some of my family were interned in camps during WWII as they were recent immigrants..as were some German..

My grandfather and I look a lot alike. We are the only two in the family with lighter skin and blue eyes..

The rest with dark hazel color eyes. So I grew up as Tomas's son in many ways.
The rest looked like German Shepards.
(been using that joke all my life )

My grandfather's good friend and foreman at his construction company was Johnny O Mera..he was a large black man, his kids and I grew up together. I remember a man coming for a job..asking for Mr O Mera then meeting John. He used to say "I guess I am Black Irish" and laugh..

We all came from somewhere..

apparently Hitlers Parkinsons was pretty advanced towards the end of his life, some question if he was even capable of taking his own life, Theres certainly some mystery who pulled the trigger, Hitler or the Lt charged with minding the door to his private office.

Guess no one will ever know.......it had to be seen Hitler had the courage to take his own life, even in death image was important

I always questioned the story that he pulled the trigger while biting down on a cyanide capsule. Why both? If you're concerned one won't work, find something better. Grab a rifle, you won't survive a 7.92mm round to the head. Use a grenade to the check like the Japanese. And if he was so concerned with what happened to his body afterwards (ie, arranging to have it burned) why not set off a bomb in the bunker and blow everything around you to dust?

Not saying I have any answers, or that I would expect ol' Adolf to be thinking intelligently, but that always seemed weird to me. Too bad he didn't off himself in the 30s...

Here is a good starting place: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Irish_sentiment

Each marginalized group has had its own special kinds of disenfranchisement.

Anti-Irish sentiment or Hibernophobia may refer to or include racism, oppression, persecution, discrimination, hatred or fear of Irish people as an ethnic group or nation, whether directed against Ireland in general or against Irish emigrants and their descendants in the Irish diaspora.

Fcuk Yeah! The whole world is scared of us ... LOL :laugh2:

To be hohnest, we are probably one of the most loved nations globally, I have been to well over 100 countries in the world and have never ever had any issues being Irish, actually quite the opposite :thumb:

Oh and I am Irish - Irish, born and bread in Ireland from Irish parents :D

Now stop picking on the Irish and get back to picking on your northern neighbours :hippie:

I have one word for you - Boston. It is home to more Plastic Paddies than anywhere else.

I posted the following anecdote two years ago or more, but it seems sufficiently relevant to re-post in this thread.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the mid-eighties, I lived in Cambridge, Mass for a while. I was pretty broke, but when I could afford a beer, I used to drink in the Plough and Stars on Massachusetts Avenue.

Most nights, someone would come around the pub with a collecting box, looking for contributions to the Struggle for Freedom in Ireland. The people collecting - and a lot of the regulars in the pub - felt that they were in some way Irish, and that the IRA was resisting oppression on behalf of the Irish diaspora. As the IRA had done their best to blow up my dad, a London copper, I wasn't too keen. But then I wasn't very keen on the armed Unionists either.

Still, I didn't want to get into that argument in the pub, and especially not with a well-meaning guy whose grandad had got out of all that crap and made a life for himself in the US, so I always used to tell them that I would put a hundred bucks in the box if the collector could name four towns in Northern Ireland, apart from Belfast. I never felt there was much danger of having to pay up, and I was right.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thing is though, what Americans almost always have that most (white) British people don't, is an interesting family story.

You go back four or five generations in my family, you simply find country blacksmiths who moved to the big city to become factory metalworkers. It's not the stuff of enthralling pub conversations. But most Americans (of most colours) who go back a few generations will find several countries of origin, usually some kind of crisis that prompted departure from those countries, a journey to a new world, the struggles that ensued there, the coincidences of romance and marriage that lead to people describing themselves as an eighth this and a sixteenth that. That's fascinating, that stuff - and I'm sure it gives people a sense of belonging not only to the USA but also to somewhere else.

I think it's a good thing to pass those stories onto one's kids. But, as Malikon implies, it doesn't actually tell you much about who you are now, and how to move forward with the life that those emigrés travelled halfway across the world to make for their descendants.

In other words, it matters a lot in a 'much-loved stories recounted after Christmas dinner' way. But not at all in a 'who am I in the world?' kind of way.

The opinion that only white people have invented anything of use is not based upon fact. A few seconds of research would remove a little ignorance people have in this regard.

Really eh! I was actually finding the Hitler discussion quite interesting until this thread was hijacked. I hate when that $hit happens, and it happens a lot lately.

On top of which, of course, everything that the US has contributed, they contributed in the last two hundred years, by definition. The rest of humanity had to struggle to run a civilisation - several civilisations, actually - for three or four thousand years without any US input at all.

So - you know - mathematics, the written language, the printing press, sanitation, government, philosophy, architecture, scientific method, pizza, hunting, medicine, gunpowder, firearms, navigation, theatre, industrial-scale genocide, the industrial revolution, agriculture, astronomy, taxonomy, the principles of justice, cities, mass transit.....

Which is not for an instant to suggest that the US hasn't contributed a huge amount since it's been up and running. It has, and it's very impressive. But you can't turn up at the party late with a keg and claim that no one would be having a good time if it weren't for your contribution.
