I<snip>we'd all be driving along in our all-black cars, at 12 miles an hour, on 2" wide tires that are mounted on wooden rims.
You say that like it's a bad thing.

Cork sniffing- if you believe the rubbish "Only a Gibson is Good Enough!".

Failing to realize that others make guitars based on that design that are in fact materially superior to what the mothership is producing. For example the Japanese make some extremely detailed LP replicas that are head and shoulders above Gibson USA products, with the exception of some of the Reissues.

Cork sniffing? I like to think I'm above that. I prefer to hire someone to do that for me!

I prefer to use my olfactory nerves for the finer things in life...

Great questions, Tim. I love these recent threads of yours which are questioning the general received wisdon within the community. Keep it up, man.

But, back on to the subject, never mind sniffing the cork, how about Sniffing the Glove; What is glove sniffing? Presumably, we should be rating authenticity of a scale of one to eleven.

In addition to some other good posts above: Cork Sniffers would rather tell you who has better tone based specs and what's on paper rather than actually listening to people play.

:laugh2:

Considering mileage, for some wallets, it might be.

I think this hits it best.

My guess is they expect the best tone from what they consider are the best ingredients. That's not unreasonable to think, just not very out-of-the-box.

I tend to agree that "cork sniffing" is mostly connected with a unquestioning devotion to tradition. It generally manifests as a hatred of weight relief, electronic advancements, anything digital, mass production, etc. For these folks, nothing of real quality was produced after 1959, and hand-crafted historic re-issues are, at best, tolerable compromises.

I'll add that cork sniffing can sometimes be when a person buys a product as a status symbol rather than because they can truly appreciate the quality.

I adapted someone else's pic for this:

Cork-sniffing is pointing out to someone that their new Tele isn't real because it's not made of the "right" wood.
