When it comes to Les Pauls.

If someone posts a picture of the back of their Les Paul and I notice a seem and say "aww, too bad it's not a 1-piece body." Is that cork sniffing??

"I'll never play or buy a chambered Les Paul." Cork sniffing?

"Nashville bridges suck." Cork sniffing?

"All new Les Pauls are crap and nothing compares to my '76 Deluxe." Sniffing the cork?

You get the drift...

Sniffing the cork only makes you smell cork. Has nothing to do with the wine in the bottle...and everything to do with tradition.

Non-traditional stuff gets sniffed, and tossed aside, because of the lack of smell(not enough time to penetrate the cork)...and now we can go and buy a "traditional". That's the best bit about it all. Shrewd marketing, at it's best.

Cork Sniffing = Any ostracizing of another's choice in guitar.

The act of attempted established superiority of one model over another.

Guitar snobbery.

My favorite is the whole "Epiphones aren't Les Pauls."

Denigration of others' choices = cork sniffing.

My thoughts.

I like this, but I would add that it's the denigration of other guitars in favor of your own that makes it cork sniffing. Simply saying that you don't like chambered LPs based on personal preference without denigrating those who do like them would not qualify as "cork sniffing."

I aspire to be a wine guy, but my palate just isn't developed enough to truly discern the differences between many wines. I am getting better though.

Now if we're talking beer, I'm a full blown cork sniffing uber-snob!:thumb:

To me it's just all those folks who are under the notion that just because it costs more..... it's better.

The people who think you can only get great tone with expensive gear.

The people who think you can only get great tone with tube amps.

The people who think that custom shop guitars are way superior to regular guitars.

The people who think Gibsons are way superior to Epiphones.

The people who spend a lot of time worrying about tone woods and neck tenons, and tone caps, and replacement nuts, and boutique pickups and pedals and on and on.......

I know I'm in the minority........ I disagree with all these folks.

That made me remember that Les Pauls with 2 or more pieces of wood in the body really have a less favorable tone then those with one piece.

And are norlins that good???

Cork - the little thing at the top of a wine bottle neck
Nut - the little thing at the top of a guitar neck

So if you're talking about guitars and it's 'cork sniffing' then surely it's 'nut sniffing' when putting down somebody else's wine? :laugh2:

I think cork-sniffing means any "purist" snobbery, denigrating anything that deviates from the 1959 LP "touchstone";

1./ All Norlins are crap because they're not made like a '59.
2./ New Les Pauls aren't "real" Les Pauls, because they're not made like '59.

I've said it before - it's a good thing car manufacturers don't display the same distain for evolution or technological change, or we'd all be driving along in our all-black cars, at 12 miles an hour, on 2" wide tires that are mounted on wooden rims.

Cork sniffing as a term is used to capture a perspective that is colored by snobbery and pretense. All of these statement COULD be cork sniffing, but it is also possible that none are. As with many things in life, it depends.

You're absolutely right. And what's ironic is that it was evolution itself that led to the very guitars some people get snobby about
