I had a real good relationship with my dad. He passed many years ago. Whenever I feel the need to feel him near, I just look down at my hands.. we share the same hands exactly, and I am reminded that he is still a part of me, within me deeper than I know.

That is super cool, man. And he looks just like my dad (no musician though).

I think you'll find that in reality, your dad went nowhere (just like my dad), and that anytime you need to talk to him, you'll find him on your right shoulder, thinking the same things to you that you know he always DID think.

I agree with John Lennon when he said (roughly quoted)- death is nothing more than a changing of trains.

My dad still mentally chides me when I'm an idiot, smiles like he knew I could do it when I succeed, is always proud of me, tells me to respect my mom (who took another train also) or he'll mentally kick my butt, and just generally do the best I can, because I'm just punishing myself if I don't. My dad couldn't be gone if I WANTED him to be. :)

yeah im with you bro, i feel the same :) its good to hear such things, thanks :thumb:

Dads are the best. Im not real close to mine but he is still the best. Im fortunate enough to be close to my son who thinks I'm the best. Not so much with the daughter because shes 16 and hates all adults at the moment:D

Sorry for your loss, Bud. I lost my Dad about 10 years ago. It felt like most of my soul was gone with him.

Sounds like your dad was a great man, and a big influence for you.
That's great stuff, your story was very touching.

I lost my dad 3 years ago, its tuff.

I'm a dad, love being a dad, best "accident" that has ever happened to me.

Sorry to hear about your dad Horse. Thoughts are with you and yours.

Today is the day that I've never felt prouder to be my dad's son. He's starting a cycle from Mizen Head to Malin Head (Southern most to Northern most point in Ireland) tomorrow to raise money and awareness for Neurofibromatosis. Today I dropped him off so he could get his transport down to the start. And as the only person in the group to have done this before (he did it last year) all the other guys really were looking up to him. All the other lads are in their mid 30s, he'll turn 55 in September. Very proud to be his son

Sorry to hear of your loss. It's tough watching our folks get old.

In my mind's eye my folks are still in their 40s (where I am now!)...when I see them it hurts, because I see the age on them, and know they cannot be there for me forever. I love my folks...after I joined the Air Force my Dad and I got along a lot better. After I made E-7 he actually said he was proud of me, and when I made E-8 he was just speechless. He retired from the AF with 25 years; I retired with 24.

Unfortunately I cannot be a Dad myself, but I know I woulda been a good one. I try to pass on my knowledge to the kids in our church, and to all of my nieces and nephews. :D

Keep that memory lit, I know I have a lot of them myself. :D

Sorry to hear that bro ... but he is in a better place, where there's no violence or descrimination, and he will join the big Heaven's jam ... but be sure he will be always with you in though times :)

To Dan (Horse), and all the others who shared their memories, thanks! It really is hard to lose a parent. I lost my father two and a half year ago, and I can understand what you've all been saying about celebrating the life. From the beginning I've been sharing stories of my father and laughing about the times we shared instead of morning the end.

We were always close, and we got closer when I went off to college. He was always there when I needed him. When I fell on my ass, he became my best friend (and I was his, according to numerous reports from his coworkers), and we got closer and closer until the end. I love the guy and his crazy stories. I find myself more and more like him everyday.

Losing a parent is rough. It can rip the wind right out of your sails. Like Deftone said, it feels like it rips out part of your soul.

Keep the memories, Dan, and keep smiling. Sounds like he was the kind of father you should be proud you had!
