hi guys,

Not sure how to write this so i will just write. recent events made things kinda weird round here, but i think some good is coming from it. I think theres a real camaraderie and friendship here, and i see a lot of openness happening too. Its encouraged me to do something i wouldnt otherwise have done, share something deeply personal.

Last month, my dad passed away, I only told a couple of guys here, I was just trying to get my head and heart around it. this isnt a cry for sympathy, far from it. I want to tell you about him and celebrate his life and memory. I think its therapeutic for me and it feels right.

He joined the air force in his late teens, spent 4 years, mostly stationed in Singapore. By this time he had bought his first saxophone and was playing in a jazz group over there and running a jazz radio station in his down time. After leaving the Air force he was in the merchant navy for two years then married mum!

he turned his hand to being a chef and as i was brought up he passed on his love of Jazz and his artistic skillls to me.

on his and mum's retirement from the restaurant game 10 years ago he had a triple heart bypass, and made a good recovery, but he suffered from a progressive Alzheimer like dementia as a result. slowly over the years we lost him bit by bit, but he was always cheerful and loving, and loving his music, he dug the David Gilmour 'On An Island' cd i took round to him :thumb:

Whilst i was on holiday in April I was told he had been diagnosed with bowel cancer after having pains. the night he died i felt it was near. The rest of the family went home but i stayed 5 more hours into the night, he was unconcious, but i sat playing his jazz on cd to him and talking to him about how he had been a great dad and the good times we had had. he passed peacefully 2 hours after i got home to catch some sleep.

I will remember his jazz in my head, and him in my heart always. what a guy, talented, musician, artist, dad, and baker of the best sausage rolls ...

here's a pic i have of him from his time in Singapore, this inspires me every day and its him to a tee.

I wanted you guys to know about him, he deserves it, and he would have loved the vibe here.

To Dad, cheers, love you mate ;)

Wow, thank you for sharing with us.

I don't know how I am going to deal with it when it happens for me.

I learned to play guitar from my Dad, served in the Army with him until his retirement, learned a great deal on leadership and doing the right thing from him, I talk to him everyday.

It is not often you find people who are close to their parents anymore.

Yay for Dads! Mine is 84, a WWII US Navy Seabees veteran, and still kicking, and driving every day!

jesus, the seabees were NUTS....

He tells the story of stealing the officer's liquor....of standing guard duty with his rifle stuck in the ground by the bayonet so he could keep his hands warm in his pockets....of rickshaw races in China....of the poisonous snake in his bed....of the time two guys were loading crates of M1 carbines and one went off and the bullet went between two guys who were exchanging a Hershey's bar....

Sounds like a cool guy. Artistic and tough as hell, sticking in there after the bypass. Fellow Air Force vet as well. :thumb: Thanks for sharing with us your love for the man who helped make you. :)

+ one billion for all dads who inspire their sons half as much as Horse's dad did. they forge us out of raw materials that they supplied themselves.

Honestly, if you got a good one you're damn lucky. I had two and neither one offered me anything in the way of guidance or support.. or even company.

My dad was a sergeant in the Marine Corps but he is always cool headed. Now my mother, she acts like a drill sergeant!

Humble as you may be, I think you have an idea of where you stand with your kids. I for one, know that I'm a far better parent than my father was or ever could be. I'm not perfect by any means, but I try. And I at least let them know I give a shit about them... regularly.
