Unfortunately, I think my daughter tossed my Custom Buckers in the garbage without my knowledge....hence they may be in the local landfill....Argh.

I've heard some people have gotten close to the CB tone by replacing the magnets (A2 to A3) in their BBs.

Anyone here do this? Whadya find out?

Putting a A3 magnet in a Burstbucker might get you closer to a Custom Bucker. I think it's a little more than just the magnets though. It seems Gibson really did create a completely different pickup to call the Custom Bucker. Not just modify a Burstbucker. I've heard the Custom Buckers have different windings, scatter wound, with offset coils. More like alot of the Original PAF's did. Of course it's all hearsay as I have no proof.

Personally I like the Custom Buckers in my Historics. I also like the Burst Buckers in my 335. They just suit the guitars they are in.

As part of her chores she is to take out the garbage. I have two garbage cans in the basement, one large/black and one smaller white can.

"Sweetie, take out the large black garbage and the smaller white one in my music room." I forgot I had a little white bag next to the desk...... Needless to say she left the intended garbage.

Funny thing is , BB's and CB's are closely related . IIRC BB's used Alnico 2 mags and CB's use Alnico 3 (or 4 ? ,I forget) now . The CB's 1st started with Beano Sig guitar . And were helped along By WW having their own pups spec'd for their Custom run guitars (under wound spec'd) .

CB's use different coil wire now ,Which is Gibson going back to a type they used to use (IIRC pre 2006) in the 57 Classics (and maybe the BB's ,I don't recall off hand) , which many really like .

the BB's coils were Off-set wound ,always , that 's what made them ,in part, sound different from the 57's . I Think , Only Think , BB's are also Scatter wound .Early 1's (BB"s and the 57 classic's) ,imo are much better sounding. Cheap to buy now ... too .

I'd guess to say, other things like types of Steel compounds used today might be different. Might be . It's normal for Gibson to use the least Expensive materials where and when they can .

Sorry to see your Kid Dumped you pups . That's gotta hurt . If she's young enough , It's all in the nature of things and understandable . Hopefully they learn :laugh2::thumb:

If she's older ....There's a message being sent

I know a few that have taken apart Busrstbuckers and Custom Buckers. Going by what they say they are completely different pickups. Not just a modified Burstbucker.

I haven't seen this in person though. Just going by what some others have said that examined them.

Having watched how gibson does business here's my guess on pickup production.

Wind pickup bobbins - all the same, within ranges, measure resistance and sort.

Pick the resistance and either match or unmatch, pick a magnet, and it is what the three variable formula says it is.

I just have a hard time with them going to any further effort than that for pickups.

Scatter wind? I very much doubt it.

You can buy a set of custom buckers. A lot of companies make suitable similar CB and 50's style humbuckers. That's too bad about the humbuckers man. I'm sure your daughter was just trying to be helpful and take out the trash. Try not to be too hard on her.

The Custom buckers use all the same steel components, covers, baseplates, and bobbins as the Burst buckers and classic 57's. BB's and 57's use A2 mags, BB pro's use A5 mags, and CB's use A3 mags. The CB's have a totally different turns per layer, and coil offset compared to the BB's. This and the use of the A3 mag make them sound way different. So, adding an A3 magnet to your BB's may get them closer sounding to a CB, but they will still not sound like them at all due to the completely different coil geometry.
