Gentlemen, you are all thread-banned.

The reason: earlier today, I asked everyone in this thread to avoid controversial posts of most any type, and then cautioned that even "cutting it close" by way of semantics or the vague invocation of a potentially controversial topic would result in moderator action.

Flag burning is a controversial topic... and you people know it.

And as I also said earlier, we would be fairly intolerant after a time passed to allow the idea of avoiding controversy in one's posts to really sink in.

You're best advised to avoid trolling this site. If I believed any of you were acting in good faith, I'd just come in with another lecture.

But no. You guys were pushing your luck, just as I warned you against doing. So, you're out.

You can still post to the rest of the board... but again I will warn you to watch it. After this, what I have left for you is a site ban, and not just a thread ban.

In other news
Effective today, sales cost on Salmon items have increased due to the current strike in Chile causing shortages in the market.
Who knew!
On that topic... assuming that you keep pretty decent records on this type of thing in your business - how significant have the costs of food gone up for you in the last couple of years?
Up here in Canada - seems like the last few years my food costs have gone up significantly (granted - retail groceries). I seem to recall spending somewhere in the neighborhood of $70 for a decent haul of groceries and now I walk out with a couple of plastic bags and I've spent over $150.
($100 limit on the credit card "tap" and I never get to tap at the grocery store any more)

I hope that got everyone's attention.

We're not kidding around, people. Political posting of any type is a sure-fire way to get a thread ban at the very least.

I should also warn you AGAIN that we're not allowing discussions involving COVID-19, along with the political speech seeing as the issue is so divisive.

And so for the second time today, I'm asking you guys to keep it straight in here.

It would be a shame, were this thread to end up locked or in The Dump.

But then again: if members don't want to abide by the site's rules, then what else can be expected?

We're not playing. So neither should you.

@Roberteaux it's my fault, I should be the one that gets banned, not them.
I'm sorry, just came back today after a long break, wouldn't ever consider respect for a flag to be political.
You can/should honestly put the blame on me.

My bad. It's going to be hard to lose the one place where I could feel "at home" with people from a different culture and world. We used to joke about it all the time and "when are you finally gonna move here" is an inside joke at this point.

Actually, I already wrote to you to explain what the New Deal was... if I thought you were culpable in any way, I would have addressed it earlier.

Don't blame yourself for the others. Pretty sure they knew what they were doing.

Thank you for clarifying. I will "behave". I'm sorry everyone. It took a moment to adjust. Guess we have no other choice.

More green ink for everyone:

After discussing this matter with the senior moderator, I have changed the bans I issued above from "permanent" to a 7-day ban.

We're still letting it sink in that this latest bunch of sanctions is for real, and really will be enforced.

Govern yourselves accordingly, gentlemen. We are very serious about eliminating any discussions of the types already mentioned... and then some.

Aghh I'm back here for good I guess.

Hi everyone!
I'm an angry, frustrated, aging guy again. Back to ol' LPfreak.

Lt. gave an order? Ok. My papers say my rank is "reserve private" so I have to follow 'em.

Does this mean I can't say my country is shit and I'm ashamed of where I come from anymore? This used to be my place where I could feel like I'm among people who come from the place I should be from. Ahh, sucks.

What it means is, we the staff got orders from above.

If you don't like your country, I'd suppose you are most free to expatriate to somewhere else. But that would be your business, right up to the point where it becomes my business.

I happen to love my country. I fought and bled for it. And I have been in 9 countries all over the world, and every time, the USofA stands tall in comparison.

I just tuned in

This thread has never been on the edge, what happened? Please.....

Scroll back a few pages to this morning's posts; it's all self-explanatory.

As for this thread never being on the edge, I'll say: sure it has.

You guys bicker sometimes. You have your little meltdowns and so forth. Hell, we've got members who used to post here all the time, but who never show up in this thread these days because of some of the comments other members had to offer.

And then there's been some behavior involving me as a moderator that you might have noticed...

In fact, I had one regular member of this thread begin to address me in protest after being thread-banned in a different thread... as if this thread was a safe space or something.

Even more ridiculously, yet another regular member of this thread posted to tell me to leave the first guy alone after the first guy got going.

He deleted his post, but then, we can see deleted posts, can see revisions made in posts, and so forth. A lot of people don't seem to be aware that really, there's no way to hide much of anything from a moderator or the administrator. The only thing we can't see is private conversations.

So one guy decided to stick up for the other guy... then wisely deleted it. I did PM the guy to tell him to mind his own business, though. There's a place to hash out differences with the moderators-- but it's not on the board.

Never did ban either of them, though I could have done so. Just told them to behave themselves...

Now please don't tell me that you missed all of that. :laugh2:

***************

One thing I have noted over the years on this site is that in "clique" threads with regular contributors, various members sometimes fall prey to the assumption that there will be more tolerance for their posts than what might be found on a more independent and short-lived thread.

That's incorrect. Actually, the other major Backstage clique thread has been locked on several occasions as members got a bit silly and decided to do a lot of political posting.

You guys will probably never even know how many people have actually been banned from that thread-- and in many cases have been permanently banned from the site altogether. It has calmed down in there of late, but every now and then that thread calls for moderators to do some adjustments.

And that was all because they developed the erroneous idea that they were somehow above the sanctions that are taken elsewhere by way of being in their clique thread.

Wrong!

***************

What's really weird is that some members actually took it in the other direction. After being admonished verbally or given some kind of really short ban, they abandoned the site altogether after stating a belief that the moderators are for some reason "after" them.

In fact, we're not interested enough to make a specialty case out of any particular member.

Consider this: we've got over 100,000 members on this site, and more threads to ride herd on than just what's in the Backstage. Since becoming a moderator, I have ended up site-banning several members whom I have never even seen before in all my years on MLP.

So trust me when I say: it's nothing personal.

BUT, what we have also seen the whole time is this: guys who want to kind of "push the envelope"... who will use clever semantics, double entendres, the invocation of "borderline" subjects, and so forth, all in an attempt to get as close to the ban line as possible-- but without being banned.

We even have members who seem to believe that they are specialists in this sort of behavior. But then: I warned one of the biggest malefactors on the site to knock the crap off and that he will be judged by means of the spirit in which he posted.

He was wise enough to understand that he wouldn't be tolerated much longer. These days, he posts appropriately and has stopped being a thread troll.

He's one of the smart ones who apparently realizes that he's not actually anybody really special or something. He simply needs to watch his behavior, or we'll do something about him.

You see, if one's spirit in posting consists of consists of telling staff, "You can't tell ME what to do!", and then doing some borderline posting... well, then what happens is what you saw today... a series of bans. :thumb:

So: keep the crap out of here or it's just going to keep happening.

****************

Trust me: we liked it better when the policy was easygoing enough to allow *some* discussion of political or controversial subjects to a certain, limited degree.

Same with COVID. We bent over backwards to try and keep trolls from posting inappropriately... that's why we had 2 threads going. One for the media believers and another for the skeptics. But don't you know: nobody could stay in their lane.

They just HAD to go and troll those who did not believe in their personal theses.

Some people simply do not recognize a gift when it's given. But now it's crackdown time because somebody went to the administrator to complain that we weren't enforcing things to the complainant's satisfaction.

So: we're cracking down, per our instructions from the site owner.

***************

Last bit:

Keep it clean, and you won't see much of me. This site is large enough that hours go by when I'm not even looking at the Backstage, let alone this thread in particular.

But if we have to act, we have to act.

No paradise this side of the grave, I'm afraid.

I will ask once again for all members to please keep it sweet in here.

It's all up to you guys. Personally, I have no particular stake in this thread and view it as just another thread on MLP.

Best for other members to treat it that way as well, when it comes to the rules governing posting.

Here's the thing with that..

Some people who have been troublesome on the forum in the past, they seem to fancy themselves the "wily D'artangan with his rapier of wit, dancing around the staff and making fools of them".

Thermionik was one such asshole. There were others. Not surprisingly, his forum buddy was also of that ilk. They even carried on in semi-private on their profile pages how they were going to mess with us. -Bad move.

What they didn't understand were two very important things; one was that we really were rather indifferent to them, as they were not nearly as clever as they thought themselves to be. they were just not important enough for us to so much as raise an eyebrow.

The other thing that they never realize is there is very much in place a "troublemaker" clause in the MLP rules of conduct.

It's sort of a "carte blanche" for the staff.

What it means is, if anybody is causing trouble to the point where they are absorbing a sufficient amount of time of the staff having to clean up after them, they can be site banned for being a nuisance, as determined by the moderating staff. No matter how fine a line they surf this side of the rules, if they become something we have to bother with too many times, or if their constant messing with the staff pits "them against us" , they can be shown the door.

I'd like to consider all who post in here my good friends. And I'd like to think that you are all wise enough to return to the patter that made this thread such a cool place to hang out in.

So, I say let's return to those days, shall we?

Thank you

IMO what caught us unawares was how much and how fast the crackdown came...

I didn't see the goalposts move, myself.. I can't and won't speak for others.

IMO it is a shame that one squeaking wheel can spoil the whole party, but that's nothing new. It happens.

We have in the past openly asked the mods to police the trolls and warn us so the thread doesn't get dumped..

And so you have. I appreciate the reply.

We'll just hunker down till the storm passes.
