It measures 16.27 K with about 15" of lead with a black center wire. It has the double row of adjustable screws. The picture below it is a Gibson 490R for comparison. My question is did Gibson make pickups without a stamp and just a sticker with a serial number? It looks like there was a sticker in the center at one time. Could this be a prototype Gibson pickup? Let me know your 2 cents.

It is certainly a Dirty Finger. Gibson stopped putting stickers on its pickups in 1974. I don't know if Dirty Fingers were around back then (oldest I found were date stamped from 1977) but any Gibson pickup would have a T on the bobbin (aka T-Top)

Most likely it is, especially with readings like that. Probably one hot, dark mofo... :hmm:

The evidence certaily suggests a Dirty Fingers, though didn't they have gold screws?

It is a Gibson Dirty Fingers Pickup

now Brit if you could school me a bit here id appreciate it.
what year range is it?
I know its a dirty but no ink stamp nothing etched in the back as far as i can see.
if it was very early it would most likely have a left over t top bobbin, correct?
then inkstamped, this looks void of any identifier or patent number.

alos that lead seems super long, i mean were talking probably 21" if taut... if woman tone man or you could chime in and guess what it came from id be greatful.

I do not know what kind of guitar it is original to? I do know the black bobbins do not have a T on them. Were all earlier Dirty Fingers pickups lead position models with single conductor wiring? At what point did Gibson change the design of the base plate on the Dirty Fingers?

I'm not sure about what the pickup is , But Gibson puts stickers on some of it's pups now and has been for some time So , They don't use the Pat.# sticker anymore, they use the PAF sticker now .:hmm:

Here's one:

And another, an '81 set from the Seymour Duncan forums:

The first one might be rust but there is no denying the second set is gold. Maybe it was only during a certain era, cause I've also seen a zebra Dirty Fingers with a cream upper bobbin. But they do exist ;)

On further inspection - the base plate does not have a the Pat No. stamped in the base plate.

If memory serves me correctly, Gibson replaced sticker with stamp in 1975, so either this is an early DF or the base plate was replaced.

What you should do is take a a pic of the side

It's a DF no doubt, the bobbins look like Shaw era pieces so more likely an 1980+. The older DF's from the 70's would be T-Top bobbins. Unstamped baseplate? Looks original to the pickup; maybe it was a special run but more likely they just had an unstamped plate in the box.

They can have gold poles or nickel as stock.
