Could this be a form of nut binding ?

I can tune my LP up to pitch and then leave it alone for a couple of minutes, when I check my G string, my turbo tuner reads that it has gone sharp even though I havent touched it

If I even slightly bend that string it comes back to pitch and there is no audible pinging sound you can get whilst tuning up if a nut is binding. If I press behind the nut when its at pitch, the turbo tuner reads sharp g string, a bend of the string brings it back to pitch without an audible pinging sound.

The nut has big bends sauce in there and I string up properly. Anybody got an idea as to what is going on and what I need to do to resolve it as its driving me nuts :hmm:

Whats the chance your saddle might be moving? The G string is always a pain on any guitar any how. If theres nut sauce it wont "ping"(because its lubed) but could still get held up. Why it would do it without touching may be the tension slowly pulling the string through the nut since its slightly lubed. I would bet if you didnt have the nut sauce on it that it would ping, but wouldnt move when youre not touching it. Id file out that nut slot a little wider, but be careful not to make it deeper.

Another thought, you may want to clean the nut. Depending on how many times and for how long youve been putting nut sauce on it, it may be a crudded up. That stuff kind of turns to tar after it gets dust and grime in it and it may be clogging, if you will, that slot in the nut. You could have some extra space in the slot thats being wasted by caked in nut sauce.

How old is the guitar? If it a newer guitar the nut slot might be cut too narrow and all the nut sauce in the world wont help.

Did you go up a size on that or all of the strings? If the nut was cut for smaller strings you'll almost always have problems.

thats a damned good point. i had pencil lead and nut sauce in all the slots. i got a 0.8 mm soft pick i use for strumming acoustic songs and put it thru all the slots and scraped the crap out of them. after id finished, i got a real fine sewing needle from my wife and using the point ever so gently, was able to dislodge and remove any crap that was left. when id done that , i got a tub of vaseline in the house, and using the little purple fine pointed stick that comes with nut sauce, lifted a small bit of vaseline for each slot that would merely provide a lubricating lining and not sit in the nut as a solid lump.

then came the acid test. the 1st two times i tuned the g string to pitch using my turbo tuner , i watched the strobe get slower and slower and slower as it turned counter clockwise and faded away. but to my annoyance, when i re-plucked the string, the turbo tuner showed it slightly sharp by turning clockwise and this pissed me off.

but when i tried it for the 3rd time, the strobe came to a crawl in a counter clockwise direction , faded away, and when i re-plucked the string, the strobe was still slowly turning counter clockwise and NOT clockwise sharp. each time i then repeated the test was the same, no sharpness :dude:

ill recheck it on sunday and fingers crossed a dirty nut slot was the culprit. gonna get me something like sewing machine oil or liquid graphite, something real thin and slippery that provides great lubrication.

cheers for the heads up twitch :D
