This was listed as a 1998 - wouldn't this be a 1994?

Yes.
Even allowing for the mistake of using the regular 8 digit method of dating you still get a 94 (made on the 405th day of the year  )

Thanks - thought so:

What were the years these models were made?
SG '61 Reissue were produced from 1993-2012.

Since the second digit is a "4", and cannot be 405 days in the year, the YDDDYPPP format does not apply in this case. The first two digits indicate the year. It is a centennial anniversary year model.

I bought a '94 Les Paul DC Special being told by the seller that it was from a certain year
and found out the serial number didn't make any sense.
Yep, it is a '94!

Thanks - my # is 92468369, so 1998 (I think.)
  • YDDDYRRR
  • YY is the production year
  • DDD is the day of the year
  • RRR is the factory ranking/plant designation number.
So 98, 246th day of the year, 369th guitar of the batch.

In 2014 they made it real clear by installing a 120th anniversary inlay at the 12th fret.

You're talking about some Limited Edition models.
The Les Paul's had the TRC engraved (175 of 200) but no special inlay.
So many variations in 1994.
But all 1994 had that 94XXXXXX serial number!
And I do not have such an inlay or TRC on my 94XXXXXX 1994 LP DC Special.

I was referring to 2014 models where they also changed the serial number format to 14XXXXXXX and had a 120th anniversary banner on the the 12th fret.

Wow. I read (or more so assume!) '94 since the OP was about that.
:fingersx:

Yeah, the 2014 was clearly "special".
Remember the controversy?
And then Gibson came back with the 2015 specs and all hell broke loose!
