If you split your coils in a set of humbuckers which coil should you use for the single . When you split them you can use either as a single. Would it be better in the neck pickup to use the one closest to the neck or the other. And same with the bridge pu ?

Also will you notice a difference from one coil to the other in the same PU or will they both pretty much be the same ?

Thanks :hmm:

What you want to do is make sure you use the screw coil in one pickup and the slug coil in the other pickup, that way when you play the two split coils together in the middle position, you still get a noise cancelling effect. In some cases, you can alternate which two coils work together in the middle position depending on whose 21 tone 4 push-pull kit you buy. There are so many different ways these are wired.

I like to use the screw coil in the neck and the slug coil in the bridge, but that is personal preference, and a Les Paul, we are talking about. 26 fret guitars may sound better just the opposite.

Regardless of which coil is split (slug or screw) I like to take a little time and adjust the pickup height and pole screws on each pickup. That way you can really dial in the sweet spots and get a nice balance between both pu's when they are switched to full humbuckers or in split coil mode. It also depends on the how they are wound and what the coil offsets are.

And the slug coil in the bridge will be a little sweeter than the screw, which is a little brittle/thin in comparison.
In the neck the slug side is a little boomier than the screw, hence a lot of guys go bridge slug / neck screw

If you send the series link to ground (Red & White on Duncans...Green & White on Gibson pickups) you will be turning off the screw coil and the slug coil will be left on. You can wire it up the other way if you want, thought this diagram might be helpful to anyone viewing this thread that wants to try the coil split mod.

In my EMG's, I use the 89R in the neck and that has the single coil active in the coil spit position. It sounds better then the 89 that has the inside coil active in the single coil mode. There is a difference in sound and tone!
