Colbert is pushing the limits of late night comedy to the furthest possible point. That is to say that he is showing a photograph of the statue of David from a distance for two whole seconds.

Are we Americans really so prudish, so sensitive? I don't. Could be wrong.

Have a great Friday everyone! Mine spirals into sleepland. It's cold so I expect cats.

I find it interesting that the country is completely obsessed with sex, but "sex is bad" and censored. Yet we have the largest/richest porn industry?

But we'll watch a million bloody murders on TV by the time we're 10 or 15.

I can't see some t*ts on tv,...but I can watch a person hit another person in the head with a hammer 20 times and that's just fine. That's just another day of network TV.

We're so desensitized people don't even realize it.

I blame it all on the Brits, coming here, with all their hang-ups.

Our Victorian sensibilities are all on them.

We were a fine lawless territory until they started making up the protocols and taboos.

now look at us

I'm of a mind that the desire to control others stemmed from internal conflicts with their own immorality.

I think most humans are psychopaths until their late 20's.

....a lot of damage gets done in that time. ..over and over,..generation after generation.

I watched the entire Sons of Anarchy series. During that I witnessed scenes of torture, rape, murder and vicious assaults. However, not once did I hear one of the biker characters say 'fvck'. Strange, indeed.

I binge-watched seasons 1-6 and was amazed at how it lowered the threshold for acceptable reactions to situations.

Hated the self-righteous ending and how they tried to appease everyone.

Sex and swear words. I never understand the taboo. They try to justify being prude about these subjects with the "think about the kids" mentality. We were all kids once. Did ANY of us not know swear words existed? Or nipples? Hell, I had an Uncle sit me down when I was about 6 or 7 and explain the proper use of swear words to me. "Cuss all you want. No one cares. Just never do it in front of anyone's mom or grandma. They will care and you will get smacked for it" he said.

And we are supposed to pretend nipples don't exist, but watch zombie shows where people are torn limb from limb, with blood and gore spraying all over the tv screen? Plus, when you blur things out, it draws extra attention to it. I'm not advocating showing anal gangbangs during the Saturday morning cartoon broadcast, but ffs, an uncensored nipple on primetime tv isn't going to cause mass havoc in society.

People could always change the channel or monitor what their kids watch on television.

TV is The Babysitter.

(supplemented with internet)

TV is the most popular drug in the world. ...and we get the kids hooked early.

If you're correct: Why do people pop out kids and expect society to raise them?

Because people are stupid and stupid people have been breeding a hell of a lot faster than smart people.

Humans aren't inherently bad.

But stupid ones do a lot of damage. And in great numbers they affect society in big ways.

As a whole,..the human race is pretty sh*tty,..selfish,..and somewhat psychotic.

On an individual basis they can be alright. But as a whole? We're pretty bad. To each other and to our environment.

Anyone who takes 30 seconds to think about things realizes a lot of stuff we do is stupid.

Talking on phones while driving
drinking and driving
Plopping kids in front of the TV every day
giving kids phones and internet when they're like 7-8 years old
etc.

...most people don't seem to even take that 30 seconds to think.

Or they just think it's too hard and too much work to raise a kid the right way, so it's easier to let Barney/Elmo/Sesame Street and Public School do it for you, and to give the kids toys/gifts as guilt gifts for not being involved in their lives.

*"Sorry Mommy and Daddy work so much and ignore you most of the time,....HERE'S AN iPHONE!"

Then people wonder why their kid acts like a total spoiled little sh*t.

*-assuming the kid has both Mom AND Dad,....which statistically most kids I think do not.

That's a fairly common opinion but I've never seen any stats that back it up. I do wonder what the rates would be if adjusted for things like income and education.

We'd also have to define "smart" or come up with some objective way to measure it. Most people think they're smart, Mal. The guy who wants to ban yoga pants thinks he's smart and feels it's a reasonable way to protect us from immoral thoughts and temptation. It's doubtful a discussion face to face would change his opinion, LOL!

"Most people think they're smart."

I've noticed that.

The actual smart people I've met think they're kind of dumb. Or at least no where near as smart as they'd like to be. And because of that insecurity they read, and study, and read, and study,.....and end up...not really being 'Dumb.'

I've met a lot of dumb people that thought they were freakin' geniuses though. :laugh2:

Think of Kanye West and realize he's not an anomaly. He thinks he's a genius and is too smart to read a book.

...it's kinda funny.

Till you realize how many people out there are just like him.

then it's sort of scary.

We have no culture
We have no class
Our education system sucks
Our entertainment is mindless
We're selfish and obsessed with beauty and superficial things
....the list goes on,...and it's not a good list. :laugh2:

we act stupid,..because we're kind of stupid. We're raised to be stupid.

Very few seem to fight against that.
