what current marshall amp would you chose for a les paul for the classic rock sound. my interest is more towards a combo because it would be easier to move around.

IMO my JCM 800 is the only Marshall amp (or maybe any amp) that I will ever use.

It has the best classic rock tone by far, everything from Zep, ZZ, GNR, Boston, Cream, Eagles, James Gang, etc....

However for a bedroom amp I would definatly get a JCM 2000 DSL 401 combo. I have one and I absolutely love it. Three great channels and GREAT tone for a great price.

I'm thinking that you can pick one up for around $300.

I'm digging my DSL 401, it's got a good vintage crunch, and will push into molten metal sounds as well. Covers a lot of sonic territory.........

It's a 1x12 combo but it will push my cabinets as well so I am making a head box for it so I can use it with both of my 4x12's.

JMP45 MKII, Super Plexi, or JCM800. If you want a little more gain on I'd go with a JCM900 or 2000 though. What tone are you trying to nail exactly?

Please post pics when you get the box made. I have the same amp and i think thats a great idea.

I built a head box for the amp out of my JCM800 1x12 combo, I use it with a tall Fender cab (2x15 JBL). Works great. Plus it's only a 5 min job to toss it back into the combo if I need it.

I may have to check one of these out. I haven't really heard much about them until right now. Seems like a lot of people recommend super clean fender type amps so its nice to hear about something marshall sounding that can be had relatively cheaply.

Would this amp do a good job on live Zeppelin, How the West Was Won sound?

I'm a huge JCM 900 fan. It gets all the cool 800 tones and has lots more gain if you need it.

I love my 401 for classic rock sounds, but it will do more than that. I also think the JVM is a tight sounding amp that's super versatile, which you can still get plenty of classic rock from.

Yeah it will pull off Zep, AC/DC classic rock tones with lots of extra headroom, the clean is great as well and it's a 100 watt combo. They are out there fairly cheap if you look. I got mine from GC used for $399 (they thought it was busted so I got it super cheap).

+1. Tubes all the way!:thumb:

The cool thing is I've had mine since I was 16, and I've NEVER had to change a single tube! Those things a warriors, and really come alive when paired with an LP.:dude:

I would have thought the Vintage Modern 2266C 50 watt combo was a good choice, depending on how you like your classic rock.

If you don't have any sort of brand loyalty, and want to spend less cash I would suggest looking at the Bugera 1960/1990 (JMP/JCM900 Clones) amps, they kick butt and are really affordable. If you want to spend more money, you can look at buying an Orange Rockerverb or Thunderverb series amplifier.

These are amp heads though, and would of course require a cabinet.

I play the jvm410, its a 2x12 100watt combo, its plenty versatile, sounds awesome, and is heavy as hell. Probably 80 or 90 lbs. Its a chore to lug around, but I'm never sorry I brought it when the music starts. My buddy Tim plays a new Marshall Haze, its a 40 watt 1x12 combo, and it sounds great, beautiful classic rock tones. He bought it new at guitar center, paid full price, and still got it for half of what I bought my JVM for off craigslist. I am impressed with the Haze and think its a good value as well as a portable combo, but for me, I'm sticking with the JVM.

I dont think so.. mine was a steal at $500 shipped.

Great amp though. I love it. Could use a little more gain and low-end though, but a good overdrive and a quality 2x12 extension cab fix this.

I run a completely modified Epi Les Paul Standard through a Digitech Bad Monkey (good budget OD) into the DSL401, then into a 4x12 extention cabinet. It's a very versatile setup and I love the clean channel.

It will not even get close to any kind of metal though.
