Wow. I arrived at work that morning at 4:30am. Sat down and looked at my phone for the latest headlines, and that one almost took my breath away. I couldn’t comprehend it, I thought it had to be a mistake of some kind.

That's pretty much the same as my story, except I got to work around 6:15.
A young coworker of mine at the time (he's an excellent drummer, so we hit it off and used to jam and talk music all the time) came running up to ask me if I heard, which I had not yet.
Damn, it was a hard one to take on the chin and I was pretty distracted all day long..
I got home, cracked a beer, cranked up the amp and some old Soundgarden, and proceeded to beat the shit out of my guitar for hours.
Sad day.

I was staying at a hotel just down the road from Nationwide Arena doing some training for being an ice tech.
I remember waking up in the middle of the night and seeing a RIP thread here for him.....didn't really want to believe it.
Most celebrity deaths don't affect me much, but his still does.
Such an all around talented guy.

Sad.

I have a 1990s gap in popular music…. I don’t even know who he is.

I know he’s a famous singer, and considered one of the greats but I never heard of him before he passed.
It's not too late to check him out now.
Even of you're not into the Soundgarden, Temple of The Dog, or Audioslave stuff, you should still check out some of his solo acoustic type of stuff.
He was an incredible musician with a fantastic voice and range that, imo, rivals Freddy Mercury.
I doubt you'd be sorry to have spent the time listening.

Absolutely one of the best rock vocalists ever. His voice had such a unique sound. I actually did not get into Soundgarden until after he was gone. I was aware of them, very familiar with the stuff, but it just didn’t move me. I loved Temple of the Dog immediately, same with Audioslave. Soundgarden slowly sunk in, and now I really love it. He was also a good musician and songwriter, the guy was the total package, and a fucking rockstar.

Chris' death hit a lot of people hard because he touched so many with his vocals. I can still sit and listen to his music for hours.

Gone too soon...

Along with Curt, Layne, Scott, Shannon, Brad, lotsa 90s grunge lead singers didn't make it. Such amazing music from that era, took a toll I guess..

Just did a four hour drive (earlier today), listening to my Pandora Chris Cornell channel. I love his music. If you listen to his lyrics and those of the songs he covers, especially the 2015 live stuff, he was in a lot of pain. He also has lost several close friends (Andy Wood, Layne Staley and Chester Bennington) along the way.

He is one of a very few number of guys with 4-octave range and it shows.

"Say Hello to Heaven" is a pretty strong testament of love to a deceased buddy. "Doesn't Remind Me" is the definition of disassociation which is a travelling companion to depression. And the list goes on.

I have really connected to his music and find it difficult to understand his suicide considering the high art of his music.

Doesn't seem like it's been that long. Cornell has always been one of my favorite musicians. I've always loved this song, particularly the solo acoustic performances of it.
