And the cheapest. Anyone else do the "mapleflame" mod? This alone made more difference than changing out the tailpiece or the bridge.

Skydog,
Please post some pics and/or an explanation of how you did it.....and....
What is a "mapleflame" mod?

I would be interested.

Just Googled it :)

I didn't realize that the stock ones are made of brass - no wonder some bridges are tilting.
Thanks for the tip though. Not that I have much use for it on my Epiphones ;) Guess I'll have to go with the Faber E-sert for similar effect.

One of the ways to offset the inherent weakness of the brass posts is to double thumbwheel it. I'm thinking of putting a brass post (2") on the treble side. Might be overkill. I now have 2-1/8" posts. I have a second thumbwheel tight to the body and a regular nut on top of the bridge. Locks everything down as Roman suggested.

skydog... Did you drill your post holes deeper? I bought a bunch of longer screws a year of so ago, but when I went to do it the first time, the posts were pretty much already bottomed out. The main intrigue of this mod for me is the depth thing more than the metal, so I just haven't revisited it. I'm just wondering if you did drill deeper, how did you go about it? :Ohno:

I did drill to a depth of 1-1/2". I used a 5/64" bit to avoid compromising the existing threads. I left 1-5/8" of bit out of the chuck, and drilled down until 1/8" was left showing. I then taped a depth of 1-1/2" on the threads and screwed them in before removing the head, that way the threads were already "cut". Hope this helps.
