I spent some time this weekend at my friend's studio comparing several amps and cabs. When we were comparing Komets, he had his and mine plugged into a Vintage Modern 412. That cab sounded great! He tells me that it is loaded with the made for Marshall G12C, which was also used in the Hendrix cabs. I thought those speakers sounded PERFECT with the Komets!

I currently have (2) 4x12s. One is a Marshall 1960TV loaded with (2) Red Fangs and (2) Wizards. The Fangs are rated at 50 Watts and the Wiz's at 75 Watts. They handle my 73 Super Lead without blowing up and sound great. Eminence marketed this as their Barking Blues pairing, roughly equivalent to pairing a Blue with a G12H30.

The other cab is an early Marshall 1960B repro made with the right stuff and loaded with (4) Red Fangs. It is my best sounding cab but not by much. Both cabs sound great as is. The only Issue I have with either cab is that they are both LOUD! Red Fangs and Wiz's are rated at 103dB SPL, 1W/!M. By comparison, a typical Greenback is about 97dB SPL 1W/1M. That is a very significant difference in loudness.

The G12Cs I heard sounded perfect with my Komet. They are not too loud, they are voiced perfectly for the amp and they allow the amp to breathe properly without blowing down walls.

So my question is, does anybody know where I can buy a quad of these G12Cs? Also, does anybody have specs on these, particularly sensitivity and resonant frequency? If they are unavailable after-market, if I know the specs, I can better find a sub. Thanks!

Isn't the G12C similar to the Heritage Greenback (marked 20 watts handling but really 25 according to a Celestion rep)?. Same as the EVH GB, as I recall.

From what I have read and what I have heard with my own ears, the G12C is different from the others. I spoke to Jim at Scumback today and he suggests a quad of M75-PVC in 65 Watts. He also owns a Komet 60 and says they are the closest to what I am looking for.

In the meantime, I am looking for a quad of G12Cs. if anyone has any for sale.

Scott, would you like me to ask my contact at Celestion UK what the story is?

Cheers, Rudi

Uhhhhhhhhhhh, yeah!!!!!!!! Please let me know what you find out. I know of two Celestion reps that frequented other boards who are very honest about changes and details to their products EXCEPT for these speakers. They refuse to say anything about them.

So far, what I know is that it uses an H1777 cone with minimal doping and an M sized magnet. Based upon that and what I heard, they sound like they are right about typical Greenback sensitivity but have a bit more clarity and depth to them. They also get very aggressive when pushed. They are really cool speakers!

The Scumbacks that Jim recommended to me, also sound like they are more to my liking but they are $159 each plus shipping. I was hoping to find a quad of G12Cs for $100 each somewhere.

Thanks, Rudi! They were made custom for Hughes and Kettner. I have one left over from a 4x12 and would like to know what's best to pair with it.

Curious to see what you find out, Rudi.

From my memory, the G12C was manufactured at both Celestion locations. The UK-made version went into the Hendrix cabs, and the Chinese-made version went into the Vintage Modern cabs and combos. Then after Marshall pulled the plug on the VM line, Celestion sold the remaining stock of Chinese-made G12C's to Mojotone. Mojo then slapped on a different magnet cover sticker, calling it the Watchtower to hint at the Marshall/Hendrix connection. But, all this info gets a bit hazy as I get older.

NotScott, if you're looking for a G12C quad, Mojotone still has some Watchtowers left. Or, you could pick up a Vintage Modern 4x12, pull the speakers, and flip the cab.

G12C is the same as a G12M with just different doping. As others have mentioned the Mojotone Watchtower speaker is G12C spec. I had a quad of UK made G12Cs for a while, they do come up for sale from time to time. Don’t get hung up on the label - the Watchtower speakers are what you want.

That is correct. Hendrix G12Cs were made in Britain. VMs were made in China. From what I understand, with the production numbers required by the VM series, they needed the capacity of the Chinese manufacturing.

I have heard the Watchtower is a G12C with a different sticker but I usually ignore such talk as "Brand X is just Brand Y with a new label." I may have to follow-up on this one though. I did hear that Marshall had or has some G12Cs available as replacement parts but that they are hideously expensive.

I think I will give the Wtachtowers a second look. Thanks!

Email sent guys, we'll see what comes back early next week. I also asked for Spec Sheets for both G12C + G12F-60 and what is the closest current Speaker to the G12C, in case anyone wants something close as the Watchtower is now down to 2.

:cheers2:

There's a dude on Portland Craigslist that's been trying to sell a quad of Watchtowers for a while. I'm sure he could be talked into shipping them at this point, having had them listed for almost a year.

Chris, Scott, John, Mike & Case, please find as follows, sorry this is about as much as I can get.

Hope it helps a little.

Cheers, Rudi

"Hope all is well.

Can you please do me a favour & update / answer the following for me: -

  • Celestion G12F-60:
    • Do you have a Spec Sheet for this Speaker?
It’s a custom speaker, so there won’t be one.
  • If not, can you please confirm the dB output at your usual 1W / Frequency?
96dB
  • Celestion G12C:
    • Understand the Celestion G12C runnout went to Mojotone & was labelled the Watchtower
    • Going forward what is the closest Speaker that you currently manufacture that matches the G12C?
A G12M Greenback
  • Also do you have a Spec Sheet for the G12C
Sorry, no. But it’s not going to be very different from a G12M

Many thanks in advance mate.

Cheers, Rudi"
