It must be nice to be so prodigiously talented. Perfect song in every way.

I also stumbled upon this one recently, and it has kinda hung with me since then. I have recommended it to others.

I have always liked this song and have thought much of Winwood, he is so damned talented. And frankly for a somewhat older guy, crazy how good his vocals remain.

Great video great song.

I remember in High School one of my older buddies turning me on to Traffic.

A truly beautiful song.

Steve Winwood really does an uncommonly large amount of talent going for him. When I try to imagine what it must have been like to be able to write such a song as this, I just draw blanks.

Can't imagine it all, actually.

Yeah, it is really nice to see how much he's still got it.

I can forgive him for the 80's.

I wonder how much Clapton was responsible for the distinctive guitar part or if Winwood came out with this on his acoustic like that and they just electrified it.

Love this song. Wish I could sing it but the near the end part is impossible for me to do for some reason.

I've wondered much the same thing. All I've been able to gather, though, is that because this song sounded a bit more like something from Traffic than anything by Cream, that Eric was apparently pleased with it. The other thing I'm aware of is that Clapton's contribution on the original recording was him playing on acoustic.

Again, same here! Unfortunately, I simply don't have the vocal range that Steve Winwood had...

Or much by way of any of his other talents, come to think of... :hmm:

I love this video too.
I leave my old Ibanez dred tuned down to play it regularly.
( drop a whole step, then drop low D to C)

Winwood's lyrics are so simple and vague, yet his songs are so warm and moving, when you just look at his lyrics, you'd think the song would suck, yet when he writes and perform the music, the sung lyrics seem so much more than the plain words imply. Disjointed thoughts and incongruous words, yet merged into an amazing vocal range and a musical style all his own.

Yeah, there's other guys in his bands, but he's the primary writer.

Huge influence for me.

Examples:
Sea Of Joy

Following the shadows of the skies,
Or are they only figments of my eyes?
And I'm feeling close to when the race is run.
Waiting in our boats to set sail.
Sea of joy.

Once the door swings open into space,
And I'm already waiting in disguise.
Is it just a thorn between my eyes?
Waiting in our boats to set sail.
Sea of joy.

Having trouble coming through,
Through this concrete blocks my view
And it's all because of you.

Oh, is it just a thorn between my eyes?
Waiting in our boats to set sail.
Sea of joy.

Sea of joy.
Sea of joy.
Sailing free.
Sea of joy.

Had To Cry Today

It's already written that today will be one to remember
The feeling's the same as being outside of the law
Had to cry today
Well, I saw your sign and I missed you there

I'm taking the chance to see the wind in your eyes while I listen
You say you can't reach me but you want every word to be free
Had to cry today
Well, I saw your sign and I missed you there
And I missed you there

Had to cry today ...

I think at that point Eric was happy to play the songs of others that he admired. Not saying he didn't contribute his own bit to the song, but he played on an awful lot of stuff by others at that time and that seemed to be the phase he was going through.

The chord progression looks like one of EC's favorite progressions used on many Cream songs, though. :hmm: :)

Maybe Winwood was trying to write like Eric on that song? :hmm:

Windwood can do it all - guitar, keys, vocals - and he's been doing it since he was a teenager.

One of my all time favorite tunes. SW's voice on the BF studio version is timeless.

That fireplace is gonna dry the git out.

You can tell it is an old home when they have a walk-in fireplace.

I was/am a huge SW fan from Spencer Davis (hard to believe they have at least two legit, timeless standards to their credit), Traffic, Blind Faith and on up through the ages, "I even like Arc of a Diver" but, I never really caught on (musically) with "Back in the High Life" but, I'd did like the lyrics. SW must have half a dozen timeless standards to his name.
