I get updates from my buddy who I play guitar with who also happens to work in that department. He makes me want to go back to teaching... LOL

Inspirational thread. :dude:

I've done much, much worse in my day. Gonna take that up a notch, soon as I'm done with finals this semester. :laugh2:

I predict a fun evening for all involved!

People need to lighten up!

I used to make suggestive comments to my teaching assistants in College quite often. The worst I ever got was a request to "cease and desist" :laugh2:

yeah, what are you guys worrying about?...young girls call me cute all the time! This is something that should only be between them and me

However, I agree, the suspension is outrageous. Still, situations like this do need to be dealt with. I have had a young female student have the outward hots for me, it aint fun, flattering, titillating, whatever you want to call it. There was a need to address the student's inappropriate behavior such as open flirting in front of students. I asked my admin to intervene and I think it was handled well. The bigger issue here is that this boy wasn't handled with more sensitivity.

Suggestive comment = Hey teacher, how about you and I get a six pack and hook up after gym class---

Simple child like STATEMENT= Teacher, you're cute!

IF this was a case of a boy continually making statements like this, after being asked not to, and explained to why he shouldn't--then maybe this would have been the correct course of action---

The story doesn't state this, or even elude to it--:hmm:

And frankly, an adult teacher, male or female, that would feel the need to go to his superior the first time this were to happen is sad as well--

Get another teacher--If you are male, get a female teacher- sit the chile down, explain why even though it is a nice thing to say, it's not the proper thing to say- Most likely, the child will respond appropriately --

What a difference four decades makes.

My ninth grade English teacher was the sexiest woman in our junior high school. There wasn't one guy who didn't take as long a look at her as he could get away with. I'll put it this way---she had eyes that probably lit the way for a lot of people during the great northeastern blackout, a hair and facial profile that would have left the editors of most fashion magazines paralysed in awe, and legs that . . . well, forget stopping traffic, they would have caused six four-car fender-benders in a three-block stretch.

But if some otherwise hormonal ninth grade student was brave enough to tell her to her face he thought she was that beautiful, she was gracious enough to accept it for the compliment it was. She married during that school year and you can bet lots of guys were in mourning over that.

I waited until we graduated before I had the nerve to tell her to her face that I thought her husband was the luckiest guy on the planet. Beauty and brains, she was, and if you could appreciate You Can't Take It With You she had a special twinkle in her eye for such students. (It was her favourite modern play and you could tell she was in heaven teaching it.) She thanked me graciously for saying so, kissed me on the cheek, and said I had it backwards---she was the lucky one to have him. I hope they've had a long and happy life together.

But if this were to have happened today, in this screwed up world and country, they'd have me on sexual harassment and her on contributing to the delinquency of a minor, for nothing more dangerous than me telling her I thought her husband was that lucky and her saying thank you with a kiss on the cheek.

At the rate we're going, life itself is going to be against the law some day. In school and out of it . . .

How recently was this?
Teens and tweens are far more advanced today than in previous decades.
What appears to be a school girl crush (innocent enough), could have been disaster.
She could have goading you into something much more serious.
Good call on ending it right away.

There are a lot of details missing here. There is no mention of what was said in the suspension letter and the devil is in those details. I once had to deal with a student who had threatened to sodomize a female student, they were twelve when it happened. The bigger shocker was finding out it had happened before-when he was eight. Seems older brother was introducing little brother to hardcore XXX vids. Of course, you would want a student like this around your daughters, eh?

In this case, there is a lot around what this 9 yr-old student's character is around others. Sometimes, school community's will be tolerant of serious behavior and 'the straw that breaks the camel's back' is the offense that sends the kid home for a time-out. So did that happen here? I don't know. Not saying it was, not saying it wasn't.

The mother agrees that what he is accused of saying was grounds for suspension-but she wasn't informed of that. Here is a pretty serious problem IMO as there should be better communication between the school and home. But then, were there attempts made to reach this woman? Again, I dunno, parents are often really busy, cannot be easily reached or just ignore the warnings while protecting their child-sometimes out of guilt for negligence, past abuse, etc.

Again, not saying that this is the case, but there are many facts left out here. Personally, I think it's fvcked up that this is a news item.

Our schools have both my and my wife's cell phone number--

My 14 year old daughter brought home a discipline notice, informing us she will have detention on FRiday-

Not a big deal, she gets good grades, doesn't cause trouble---

This notice is because she has failed to dress for P.E. for the third time this semester-

No excuse--she just didn't want to participate that day- I explained when I saw this had happened the other times, if it happened again, she would be in trouble-

I now have a phone and ipod that belong to her--They are mine for a while-

The detention is not a punishment for her, it is a punishment for US--It will inconvenience us greatly, as we have plans for Friday evening-

I informed her she would be walking home after her Friday detention-It will be cold and miserable--It's a mile, in our little town, with paved sidewalks, but it will give her a little time to contemplate if the slacking off was worth it--

We'll see---

Agreed. And I'm sure that when you are called, you call back. I have had student's for whom I have never made any contact, on parent-teacher nights, requests for interviews, etc.

I know your main aim here is to continue to beat up teachers Blues, you seem to like it. And while I cannot say that we are perfect, these stories of outrage are often missing details.

I like beating up BAD-Incompetent and worthless teachers--

Not good or at least adequate teachers--

We need to root out ALL bottom 50%ers--They need to find other work--

I have 4 close relatives, and almost a dozen close friends that are teachers---

I have no problem with quality teacher--I have absolutely ZERO patience for teachers that should be doing something else---ZERO-

If this story is as simple as it is portrayed--this woman needs to find another line of work--It's that simple-

Fair enough. All I am saying is that there are missing details here. And please don't tell me you have not been immediately suspect of a news item from the 'lamestream' media. We have all either jumped on in belief or skepticism of such a story.

My skepticism is the notion that a suspension would be handed out with such ease over a 'simple' event. We have had students who have thrown punches at their teachers, only to be suspended internally-sometimes only for a period-and return to class with an arm-twisted apology. Our policy is to not suspend students anymore because we started finding that some students poor behavior was linked to a desire to be suspended. Some get presents for being suspended from their parents. That's right, you heard that correctly.

Again as I stated on another thread, I love my job. I know the importance of working with parents and enjoy that aspect as well. By and far, the relationship is in my view excellent. As well, I truly believe that despite appearances, most parents care greatly about their children and what is happening during their day.

But there are unstable people out there, quite able to procreate, ingest narcotics while pregnant, neglect to raise their kids-and then send them to us to straighten them out. We sometimes do good things to help these children change their lives, but it can be impossible if aspects of home life cannot be addressed.

If I was a teacher/establishment hater--I would have went to the school crying the blues to the principal about the great injustice perpetrated against my child-

Truth is, my child screwed up-broke the rules at school and at home-

The school handled it properly, as did the teacher-

Kid will be in a room for an hour with other dufusses (or is it Dufi ) then, she will will spend a cold walk home, bitching about what a mean guy I am---BUT, when she thinks about not participating in gym class the next time-She will give it a second thought--

She has a goal to be a veterinarian-She has the grades-She currently does not have the work ethic-She is prone to slack-

I explained there are only 33 vet schools in the nation-Getting in is hard. I explained she better have a 3.5 or better and frankly, a 3.75 GPA might be what it takes to get in-

Getting a damn C in PE is foolish and it drags your GPA down--

It's a life lesson--

I was in love with my Kindergarten teacher, Miss Poffinball. I cried the day she quit her job, to get married and move far, far away...:(
