Hey everyone, I don’t want to blaspheme or anything but I really prefer plain tops over flame tops, but in my research I can’t seem to find a 59 reissue that has a plain top. Do they exist?

Welcome to the forum,... interesting first question:hmm:

Lightly figured R9s exists,... but a truly plain R9 maybe hard to find,....

A R8 is not much different than a R9,.... some even share a R9 neck profile,.... so other than an serial number i can't really see the point in a plain top R9.

Unless you want to spend the extra dough.

..... I almost forgot,.... R8s today have a different fret size than an R9..... older R8s don't..... pre 2018 i believe.

I've seen at least one 40th anniversary R9, or made around 1999.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! The reason I'm not after an R8 is because i've heard the 58 necks were like baseball bats! Might look into an R0
The big baseball size necks on R8's were back years and years ago. For many years now the R8 and R9 necks have not been much different. Just depends on the individual guitar.

Personally I would look for a R8 that you like and ask for neck measurements. Save you alot of money over a R9 or R0 and they are the exact same guitars build wise.

The only differences between an R8 and an R9 are:

- The figuring of the maple cap
- The neck thickness
- The Price

The only difference that is certain the price. I’ve seen R8s with figured tops tha are more attractive than many R9s, and I’ve owned A couple different of R8s with smaller necks than the R9s I’ve owned. IMO, there is no reason the seek an R9 over an R8.

I thought the big baseball bat necks were a desired feature for some players though?

Are there any other notably differences between an R8 & Ro besides the neck?

If you don't like the big necks then be on the lookout for a G0 as mentioned above. Those are actually just 1960 reissues with a plain top built for Guitar Center. Some fine instruments. I much prefer the earlier runs. You can usually find them priced in the low to mid 2000s

Since 2018 the necks are closer to the same but the R8 has different frets.

I think the R8s get closer to R9 spec from '14 to '18.

The newer R8s I've been seeing on Wildwoods' site are getting larger again.

I'd definitely want a neck measurement prior to purchase.

Even with a neck measurement you can't feel the shoulders until you have the guitar in hand.

I've had R8s that measured .89 at the first, right in R9 territory, but the shoulders made that neck feel much larger.

Last time I checked the new (2017+) R8s had the TH '58, aka Slash First Standard neck profile, around .89 at the 1st and .99 at the 12th. It's definitely on the smaller side for an R8, and the Carmelita neck on newer (2018+) R9s is a tiny bit smaller than that.

+1 on the G0s. They are R0 with lightly figured or peekaboo flames or plain tops. Construction-wise they are the same as a regular R0. Also worth checking is Wildwood spec’d R8. They often times have R8s with ‘60s neck profiles.

Legend says that 2017 R8’s have R9 necks...I think you would be happy with one of these. I have one and the neck is thinner than on other R8’s I played before...im a plaintop lover too
