In my experience, all the VOS reissues I have played, I never really liked the finish, regardless of smell, it felt thick and sticky to the touch. I always cleaned and polished them to remove the VOS.

The two CC's I have owned, Shanks and now a Greg Martin, the finish on the CC's is very different to the VOS. It is much harder, no sticky feeling, plays super smooth on the back of the neck. They feel to me like they have a different finishing process to the VOS Reissues. So much so, that when I recently purchased the CC15, my choice on what Les Paul I bought was limited to the CC's available at the time, I did not want a VOS purely because of the VOS finish.

All CC's I have owned or played, the finish on them has felt very consistent. Hard and smooth.

I polished off my VOS ****e on my 14 R9. I returned a 20th Anniversary Murphy burst becuse the VOS gunk was way too much and thick for my tastes. Hit or miss. My 14/15 R8 is going to get the VOS stuff polished off when I do a string change. A little VOS is nice, too much is far too common it seems. And it is sticky, I guess the good thing is, the more you play it, the more it wears off!

Thanks for all the replies. The information is helpful. I'm just trying to figure out what's different.

It probably smells like that because the previous owner threw up all over it - just like most iconic of the originals. It's a crucial factor you know. Well, that - spilled bourbon and heavy tar cigarette smoke. That oily residue; undoubtedly glycerine from years of exposure to intense full-body sweat. If it don't smell like sex drugs and rock and roll then how can we expect it to sound as much?

Got to be honest here....lately with the smell comments from TH owners etc.

Largely any smells come from the case its in.

Gibson didn't just magically change their finish formula for a "Shanks" or the TH series for that matter.

A "smell" difference is not evidence enough to prove a change in the finish.

Lets face it, If your smelling your guitar You've completely lost your mind somewhere down the road, I find it funny though. Im looking across the room at my R9 and im going to smell it right now, Will report back with findings LMAO!!!:beer:
