Used or new aside, in buying your first LP make sure that the one you get has the neck profile that is most comfortable to you. Try to play both the 50's and 60's styles first before buying.

If you've got £870 cash, I'd keep saving and buy a 2nd hand Classic or old Standard - usually around £900-£1000. Or I'd put £870 down on a new Standard and take finance for the extra grand needed, would be about only £30 a month for 36 months. Either way, try before you buy if you can!

Unfortunately I dont have £870 in cold hard cash, I have around £450, and relistically a standard is simply out of my range.
I have cash for a second hand studio or epi, or cash plus finance for a new studio

White Studio:

Gibson Les Paul Studio Alpine White Chrome Hardware with Coil Tap

White Custom Pro (Epi):

Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro Alpine White

Get a used studio. There are always loads advertised on gumtree for around your price range. And, as others have pointed out, if you need to sell it on again, you won't lose anything. There's no point in buying new IMO.

Just been into a guitar shop near my work that ive not been to for years as i needed strings.
Was asking the owner if he had any gibsons new or used.
He asked me what i was after and why.
When i told him i was after a studio he told me not to bother as they werent worth it as they are made to a strict bugdet and he pointed me in the direction of his westfield and similar knockoffs explaining they would be a far better guitar.
He asked what i was playing at present, an ESP LTD viper 200fm with emg 81 85s he told me not to buy a gibson as my guitar would be better than it. I add he wasnt a gibson dealer as he couldnt afford the buyin.
Sour grapes maybe? Who in there right might would tell people that a westfield is a better guitar than a gibson??
Unless it really is true and youve all bought into the gibson hype lol

Well cutting through all the B.S. you get " he wasnt a gibson dealer as he couldnt afford the buyin "

Of course someone who doesn't sell Gibsons would try to steer you to a model they sell. Stay away from Chinese rip offs.

Yeah, go for the used Studio, and get one with a rosewood or ebony fingerboard.

Description seller gave of Guitar:

Great guitar, but unfortunately not played nearly enough, thus it's time to let it go!

Comes with an official Gibson hard case.

There's the normal wear you'd expect from a played guitar and a couple of bumps but nothing major (as the photos show). I can add more if you want to look at anything in more detail.

A few of the machine heads were changed by myself (mistake!) a few years ago and they're a bit "wobbly". There are some spare machine heads in the case if you want to change yourself but the colours different - again as you can see by the photo. My recommendation get a pro to do it if you don;t know what you're doing.

I've also added in a couple of sets of Elixir guitar strings for it as well. I think there's at least 2 sets with some spares.
