my r0 (from '08) has the burstbucker 1 and 2 in it. can anyone say for sure if these are wax potted? i'd like to try a magnet swap, but don't want to deal with it if they are potted.

thanks

you sure??? :) i'll try pulling them tonight, but if i get wax, you'll be getting a very nasty reply. :)

just kidding. thanks. i want to try an A3 in the neck pickup.

I'm absolutely positive. Burstbucker 1, 2 and 3 are not wax potted. :thumb:

well, i chickened out. :) not that i don't trust the news that they are unpotted. i'm more than likely going to end up selling them, so i'll just leave them alone.

thanks for the input, rockin.

Originally not wax potted when OEM.

People complained about feedback, Gibson started putting them in wax potted into guitars and only aftermarket were unpotted. I bought several between 2008-2011 as aftermarkets and they were not potted.

Anymore,I have no idea. My last two I bought were both potted..a BB3 I bought aftermarket new about a year ago , and a BB1 I bought that someone pulled out of some limited /special run gibson usa production model about 4 years ago.

The original bb 1 2 and 3 were not wax potted and ANY bb in a CS Les Paul is not wax potted but apparently they do have some in their regular line that are.

Being wax potted or not wax potted isn't a big deal if you want to do a magnet swap. I've done it with potted and unpotted pickups dozens of times.

dmoss74,
You might be able to tell if your pickups are wax-potted by simply removing a polepiece. If you see little wax depsits, they are potted. If not, well... They might be "lightly" potted. I had always read what jbash posted to be true. Originally they were not potted. But that changed when customers complained about feedback squeal. So, factory installed pickups got the wax bath. However, aftermarket units are supposed to be non-wax potted. You could always contact Gibson for the "real" answer... :laugh2: Also, as The Archer said, being wax potted should not affect your ability to swap a magnet.

+1
Some heavier potted pickups may need a bit of help from a hair-dryer, but that's about it. No big deal.

I'm not sure if can I post a link to a file. Do a search on google "pickup guide - gibson", 2nd link pdf file and you can get a short list of information on Gibson pickups.

OK . I'm late to this party , But here goes ....Gibson (as a General rule )( Potted their Original factory installed pups) .It's The After market pups sold were not Potted .

The BB's from the Factory are potted , But nothing is 100% from Gibson . So the only way to absolutely know ,is by opening them up
