Normally, wherever the router "comes out" is the stopping point. Meaning, the headstock
angle will stop the route because it won't sit flush on the table. You've gone far enough
it looks like in this picture.

Also, back to an earlier question you had, about the Maple vs. Mahogany for the filler
strip. The reason, I believe, is that Maple is a harder material than Mahogany. The filler
strip is very important in how a truss rod works, so make sure you cut one that has
a snug fit and doesn't allow the rod to move after its in place.

I'm building this same guitar, btw, and have been for a few months (I got distracted by
a Telecaster). There's a thread around here somewhere. Best of luck and welcome.

Btw, before you cut your neck tenon, make sure you've got the neck meeting the body
at the 19th fret, as opposed to the 16th on a Les Paul. I mention this because I didn't
pay close enough attention and had to make another neck for my "356ish" build. In the
plans I have, had I pushed the limit and tried to join the neck at even the 17th fret, it
would have forced the tailpiece off the center block which means no stability.
It's all in this thread;

I Emony,

I appreciate your comments and thnx for the tip about the neck tenon. How did you carve the top was it freehand or did you have templates for it ?

Freehand. Then again, I'm lazy, so I freehand as much as humanly possible. Having said
that, I did follow a basic "plan" and I'm big on the "holding your finger against the side
while drawing on top" way of measuring things.

Hi all,

this weekend made some progress on the fretboard i used a pre cut rosewood plank.

And the result i used a 12 inch radius block :

The height of the fretboard is now 6.6 mm what should the height of the fretboard be ? is 6.6 mm low enough ?

What part of the assembly process uses the maul shown in the final picture?
I am all for buying more tools if neccessary.

If my math is right, 6.6mm is the same as 1/4" which means the thickness is fine where
it's at. Assuming you're talking about the "crown" or highest part of the radius. We just
had this conversation and thicker doesn't affect anything but string height. To me, and
I'm sure you'll get just as many opposite opinions, thinner is better.

Hi if you mean by maul the template underneath the fretboard i used is to sand away the excess edges of the fretboard wood with the robo sander tool. And left it on while sanding the radius.

Wombat, I'm pretty sure by "maul" he's talking about the sledge hammer in the picture
and it was a joke. Having a "warped" sense of humor allows me to decipher these things.

It's a shame i am not a real master of the english language otherwise i would have appreciated this gem of a joke. The maul is used to get rid of some of my frustration when building a guitar. That's why it's close the my working area

Maybe acetone? Still, you would have to be careful not to get it on the binding...
