I have trouble with a Guild humbucker that reads open. I noticed that the tonepot didn't work and after some detective work I found out that the neckpickup was Reading open. The strange thing is that the guitar sounds good and the neck pickup isn't sounding all that different than the bridgeunit. How can it sound ok and could this make the tonepot not working?

As I know there is a few winder here I thought I should ask what could be wrong, If its possible to repair? I know it have some epoxyin it but read somewhere that I guy had hes rewinded.
Maybe Another solution will be to have a new pickup built on the baseplate and using the cover from the broken unit.

I need a working neckpickup and I dont want to rout the Starfire for bigger humbuckers so if anyone can think of a solution

How did you test it to determine it was reading "open"?
Without disconnecting it, I usually turn down the vol, & test it right at the pot connections, granted, the won't give you as accurate a reading, but it will tell you if it's working.
If it isn't working, you won't get any sound from it. You might want to check ALL the grounds to make sure you have a good connection. Don't forget to check the switch also.

Actually I first measured it in the circuit. Started with measuring at the output jack. Bridge pickup 6.7 kohm, neck ca 250kohm . Then I measured at the back of the pickup. Same result.
After that I disconnected the pickup and it measured open.

I have no Idea why it still sound but it does.

So now I wonder, is it possible to repair? Can you get the black epoxy off to be able to rewind it or is it possible to get bobbins to recreat a pickup like this?

A coil can be open and still work, but usually sounds weird and thin. The break has to be in just the right place and the coils will still work from capacitance coupling, but eventually it will completely die.

If that black stuff is epoxy potting then there is no way to fix it.

Im not sure its epoxy. From what I heard its possible to rewind. Anyway thought here might be some winder who had worked with this type of pickup and could share a way to get the black stuff off the coils.
