First off, just wanted to say I've been cruising the threads here for a while, but have never posted before.

Now for my question, what are the specific problems associated with the strings touching the edge of the bridge? I noticed that the strings on my (new to me) epi plain top touch the back of the bridge and acoustically I have noticed no issues so far (although unplugged it sounds more like my ash tele than my Gibson LP std). Is it more to do with string breakage?

Please enlighten me.

You guys keep saying that, but Dan Erlewine says otherwise. If you screw it all the way down, you run the risk of having the strings contact the edge of the bridge, which causes a whole different set of problems.
Check this month's Vintage Guitar Magazine.....
Vintage Guitar® magazine :

*shrugs*...then wrap over the stop bar. To be honest, every Epi I've seen...even the new ones usually have the stop bar all the way down.

Gibsons? Another story. But as far as these Epi's go...squeeze all the tone you can get out of 'em.

Hmmmmm.... my stopbar is as low as it goes, and there is no string contact with the back of the bridge ...... are some of y'all running the bridge REALLY high ???!!!??? Mine's not super low.... no string interference, and I never top wrap.....

I drive my tailpiece all the way down too.. & nope the strings are nowhere in contact with the bridge. I don't do top wrap. Man, you guys must be playing with tower high actions

i just found out this weekend that my bridge is moveing back and
forth on the studs. i think this is the cause of my tuning problems.
i did not want to spend any more $$ on this ephiphone les paul as
i am saveing up for a 1959 historic les paul. but i will be getting
a tone pros bridge so i wont go insane trying to play this thing.

I've been browsing about checking out the many types of replacement bridge available in the market. Boy they come in many sizes. Just measured my Epi Les Paul bridge are :

Bridge post holes : 6.3mm
Mounting posts space : 73.5mm
E to E string space : 51mm

I'm looking for a straight replacement which I don't need to drill or modify. Can anyone advise? Thanks.

Are you sure about the mounting posts space? In some cases it is 82 mm

In case you just want bridge + stop tail in a single piece, you could try to find a Schaller 456 bridge.
