I've been a therapist (psych) for 18 years. One of the reasons I got into this field was due to my belief EVERYONE regardless of race, creed, color, belief's should be treated equally and fairly. We are all the same so there is no need to treat people differently IMHO.

I learned as a child not to judge a book by it's cover and that you have to move a mountain of dirt just too find one diamond.

Because of my belief's more often than not I find myself working in places most wouldn't even venture into, let alone care about what's happening to the people who have no other choice but to be in these places. Yeah it's a tough job but I chose it and I do my best every time, all the time. This was never an issue, my work speaks for itself. As an Independent Contractor I have turned down more requests to hire on as a full-time staff person than most people have had jobs, again because my work speaks for itself.

I enjoy being an Independent Contractor it offers me more versatility than my peers and to be perfectly honest I don't like the feeling of being "trapped" in the same job day in and day out, for years and years... that just isn't me and the reason I am in business for myself.

This brings me to the point of this thread.

Today I started a new assignment at a local psychiatric outpatient clinic. I don't normally go into this section of the city simply due to the traffic and without exception it took me an hour to get to my destination. It's a dilapidated old building but that's what I'm used to anyway so no big deal. I meet with the clinic's director who immediately begins to berate me about my attire...?

He tells me I am wearing sneakers, which they are not and don't even look close to sneakers. When you wear a size 14 EEEEE you don't buy shoes off the rack they need to be ordered, but sneakers they are not. Then he goes on to tell me that my summer dress shirt must be buttoned to the collar or wear a tie (preferred). It's a summer dress shirt and it's made to be worn outside of the pants, there is no collar button and I DO NOT wear neck ties... maybe at a funeral. I didn't look like I just wandered in off the street wearing a pair of shorts and a tie-dyed t-shirt with matching flip-flops. When you have to buy your clothing/acessories in a store at the top of the bean stalk you learn to wait for your stuff to be delivered (sucks). When working I dress professionally yet comfortably, nice cargo pants have always worked for me and have never been an issue anywhere. In my line of work you sometimes have to physically defend yourself, run when feces is being thrown at you, and of course being comfortable increases my ability to concentrate.

At this point I'm beginning to wonder if I'm there to do a job or get fashion pointers?

After the first 15 minutes with this "director" who had nothing intelligent to offer other than what he percives as a fashion faux pas I decided this was not going to be a good match, I thanked him for his time and informed him this wasn't going to work for me, then walked out.

I'm really taken aback by this. After 18 years in the same field with never a problem, credentials, experience, and references some would kill for... someone who should KNOW BETTER judges me by what he perceives as a fashion faux pas?

Hey, if you don't like what you see before you see what I am capable of doing OK I can accept that, just say "hey your not for us", no problem I'm gone. To be perfectly honest I don't like working for people like that in the first place, but don't attempt to lecture me on how "you" think I should dress to get my job done! All that will do is leave you still in need of someone to do the job your people have already proven incapable of doing in the first place.

The ride home only took me 20 minutes, that's a big difference in traffic volume!

Sorry bout the rant this just really ticked me the faux off!

:rant over: :laugh2:

I'm on your side on this one, hump. Sounds like the guy was too focused on superficial issues of control to even have a clue as to what's REALLY important.

You should have quietly excused yourself, walked out to your car, then returned dressed in one of these...

Rant accepted!

Hey, I'm the last guy to forego a judging situation, when I can validly judge someone :), but in your case I think this guy just has some issues that he can't address in any other way than to do what he did to you.

Can you feel sorry for his unfortunate situation? If so, then you probably won't feel bad any more.

If you had on jeans with large holes, or a baseball cap on backwards, or maybe barefoot, I might have to agree with him. But if you were dressed appropriately wherein your appearance would not affect anyone else's thinking which would in turn negatively affect your ability to do your job, then the guy is just an asshole (the less scientific form of, 'he has issues').

And it sounds like you were dressed appropriately, though just not to his momentary standards.

I'm with you 100%. In fact if it had been me I wouldn't have been half as polite.
The problem is the world is full of arseholes like that. They pop out from under just about every stone around and can be found in all walks of life.
I got off to a good start with a new head of music at a college the other week.
He was a little man for a start.. Mmmm:hmm: Never trust a little man..Brains too near their bottoms.

Anyway I was talking to the headmaster and some other staff and he's listening. He then starts going on about certain instruments and picks up a guitar and plays a few bad power chords and says "Yeah but guitarists are ten a penny though aren't they?"
I took the guitar off of him, played some Chet Atkins, a bit of classical stuff and a scorching bluesy jazzy riff and replied.. "Not good ones there aren't". Then handed the guitar back to him. The headmaster started laughing.
You should have seen his face. He went white.

Silly arsehole.. I wouldn't normally do something like that, but he asked for it.. You have to put these tossers in their place before they try and run all over you.
You should have heard how polite to me he was for the rest of the day..

If there was a 'dress code' then it should have been made clear up front.

You were right in your actions; it's his loss, not yours.

What a pinhead.

Thanks for the supportive replies everyone... I'm starting to feel better. I think my problem is that I can't believe there are still people in this world who are like that?

I can't help the fact that I'm 6'4" with a size 14 EEEEE foot, the cards I was dealt. I understand that I can be an imposing figure in stature and I've done my best to help tone that down by dressing a certain way, wearing my hair a certain way, and I believe it helps my patients to trust more in me, it has worked well for me for years and will continue to work well for me, just not with this clinic.

Think I'll plug in my '59 LP JR... best medicine in the world!:naughty:

Ahhh... yeah when you make it a point to surround yourself with friends and family who aren't douchebags, it can be quite a shock when you run into one. They're out there in droves though, hemp. Rock that Junior!!!!

I think you should wear clothing that makes your patients feel comfortable with you; that's probably not a tie I would guess.

you know, the last people i would expect to be overly concerned with superficial issues would be people who work with the mind. you have to be pretty educated and you have probably seen a lot of different stuff, but even an uneducated, wildly different person like me can see that what's on the surface is rarely important. he's an ass.

I get that crap all the time.
I wear a nice full button summer shirt, that you dont tuck in.
Nice jeans, and nice leather shoes. Now, this is my company's
dress code.

Now, I go to Macy's and buy 3-4 new shirts.
Monday, boss man says my shirt is ugly. I tell him to piss-off!
At least I go pick mine out, his wife does all cloths shopping for him.
That shuts him up quickly.
