From day one, my Gibson LP Studio has been a guitar I've bonded with like no other. The neck, the weight, the overall feel of the fingerboard, all that. It was an instant bond. I play my best and feel like I sound my best with this guitar.

Later I added a Gibson Faded SG to my lineup. I bonded with the guitar, but I often found reasons to play my LP over the SG; at least after the honeymoon period of buying it, then upgrading electronics and the bridge pup to a JB.

It seems as though I've lost that bond with the SG and don't have much desire to play it... It's not like I got something new and liked it better, more like I'm committed to my first true love. :laugh2:

What are your experiences with this sort of thing?

Ha yeah I know exactly what you mean.

I bought a brand new gibson sg.......Sounded great!!......I had it about 5 months and it hung on my wall more than my shoulder so I ditched it. It felt shit to play and I just didnt have any incentive to play it because of that, plus the neck wasnt my cuppa tea either so it had to go. My 97 LP standard though...thats my number one...I also have a epiphone Lp custom that I also never use but that was bought for me so its staying on the wall.

I actually put the standard on ebay a few years ago to get an r8 but....I changed my mind. Now I couldnt part with it. It just feels right for me, cant really say why either. I bought it maybe 4 years ago from a shop where it had came from Japan and it was in good condition. It also felt much better and sounded better than a bunch of brand new standards I tried on the day. It actually cost more than a new one too but I wasnt bothered because it felt good.

Id rather have a guitar that feels great and sounds average than a guitar that sounds great and feels like shit. You can change pickups to shape your tone from any guitar. Having said that my guitar sounds great and I seem to have landed on just the right combination of pickup, amp, speaker and valves for my tastes.

Ive had similar things with amps too, had a few amps and considered selling my orange to get this or that head, I even actually sold a custom matamp cab Id gigged with for 3 years to get a mesa boogie head and cab....BIG mistake! so I bought a new cab (same as the one I sold) but with a diff speaker and it turned out good in the end. I feel really connected to it somehow now, I also have a lot of good memories connected to it, gigs etc etc and it's my first real les paul.

When you find the right combo it's like an old pair of Vans shoes...they just feel right.

I belong to the Church of the Latter Day Guitars. You can't have too many guitars or wives, and having both is the most fun.

Yeah..this one, the very second I picked it up. I still play some of my others but this is the one that sits on the stand next to me every night....ObG 57RI

Agree 100% with the concept of guitar bonding; right now am playing a 50s roadworn strat exclusively. Love the weight, the worn vibe and particularly the neck.

I rotate all of them. Non should or will ever be my favorite. If I don't like it I get rid of it, but I don't keep dust collectors taking up space.

My '02 Epi LP was my #1 since the day I bought it. Best Epi LP I've ever played. But, since I bought the Gibson, almost two years ago, I havent so much as even looked at the Epi.

It's still a great guitar, and will always remain in the arsenal, but I've bonded more with the Gibson than I have with almost every other guitar I've ever owned in my life.

I couldn't agree more about the bonding with guitars. I used to have an Epi LP special II (garbage) and got my current axe (Epi LP standard) in the spring from a guy about 30 mins away, off of Kijiji. It plays like a dream (compared to my old guitar :p) and is definitely my number 1. I also love playing my acoustic when I'm in the mood for it, and I'm looking into getting a drum kit in the near future to further increase my musical ability.

-Cheers

I have bonded with 2 guitars above all others, both are my 1997 Orville Les Pauls (Custom and Standard). I've sold off every Gibson I've owned since the 70's just couldn't bond with any of them.

My 97 Orville Standard has been with me for 14 years now, I bought it new at Yamano's in Tokyo while playing some shows in Japan, and it's been my favorite guitar until I got my 97 Orville Custom last year, now they are equal.

(yeah it's a Strat peaking out from the edge of my cabs, there's 4 more that are blocked by the amp on my rack stand.)

I bond with different guitars for different reasons, and no one guitar can deliver everything I want to hear.

That is one thing that really worries me about buying an old guitar from eBay (or gumtree or whatever). It sounds fantastic in principle but what happens if I get it and it just doesn't feel right? I suppose "just sell it" is the answer, but it is a bit of a PITA.
