Hi guys,

Quick questions, when routing the binding.

Do you route for the binding before or after the neck mortice?

If you route the neck mortice first, do you route the binding channel all the way up to it on the switch side? And then run the binding through that?

I ask because it seems like you will end up with either a gap or some binding glued between the neck and the body whenthe neck is attached.

In this quick drawing, I'm wondering about the green area, which will be under the fretboard, does this get routed? If so is it then filled with binding or left as a void?

Cheers for all replies

I routed after the neck mortice was cut. With mine there is a piece of binding under the edge of the neck.

Regards
Chris.

That's why it's awkward to install binding on a Studio etc, because the binding sits between neck and body....!!!!!!

Yep, you rout the neck mortise first and then bind all the way up to the mortise on the switch side.

there is no rule that says you have to do it either way. That said you get a cleaner look if the binding runs under the neck heel.

on a set neck.. bind it before setting the neck as stated above.

if you build neck thrus like i do.. you HAVE to bind after..

its simple though, if a bit time consuming..

you stop your binding bit before it touches the neck, and then finish the channel off with a chisel, taking it under the fretboard you can see it here at the top (it is a nckthrough.. but i do my tops different than most.. ends up looking like a set neck from above)

the lower binding is done in a similar manner, but you simply end the channel and sqaure the end off with the chisel.
