I’m also still feeling the lack of a P90 guitar in my stable. If budget allowed, I’d be thinking Standard ‘50s P90 Gold Top although the Special in TV Yellow and the SG Special in Faded Pelham Blue are also of interest — but not *that* much cheaper. I guess the more affordable option would seem to be the P90 version of the LP Special Tribute (and the Vintage Cherry option does look appealing...).

To be honest, even the Epiphone versions of the LP Special in TVY or the SG Special in FPB are looking like interesting alternatives in terms of overall bang-for-buckness, at least as a starting point!

What’s the MLP hive mind think about these...?!

There is no such thing as a bad P90 Gibson. And the variety is so great you could build a collection around them. Also consider the famous Epiphone Casino or its ES330 brother. Now I've got GAS just thinking about them. Thanks...

One thing rarely mentionned and worth checking out, is the bridge P90 proximity to the actual bridge. It make a world of difference in the tone that pickup will give out. If it's very close, you can get the Telecaster twang out of it. A bit further will give you instant fatness and a rich growl.

If you need light weight a SG Junior is nice at 7lbs and under.

Double cut Juniors are nice for access to higher frets.

Les Paul Standards for a P90 monster with all the charm.

There is no "best." Just pick your favorite shape and go for it.

Both my SG Classic and my LP Special are so good it is hard to believe.

My Firebird is probably my favorite, but it is not the "best" just my favorite.

And my ES 330 is probably the sweetest guitar I own. Arguably my "best" guitar.

This thread sure feels familiar. :hmm:

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I am one bourbon too many away from pulling the trigger on a SG Junior VHC.
Good choice at a great price. I was sure, like, absolutely certain, that I was going to get a '50's Standard P-90 goldtop. But when it came time to lay down the cash the two guitars I like best were the SG Junior and the Les Paul Special. Something about those two models spoke to me more than the '60's, the SG Special or the LP Jr.

I ended up with the LP Special, because I realized that, at least for me, the magic is in the neck pickup. But I still lust for the SG.

P90 neck tone is sublime, and my favourite clean tone of any kind of pickup. I LOVE the simplicity of a Jr., but dang, I just cannot see myself sacrificing the neck tone on my Special.
Agree 100%. Plus I HAVE to have an adjustable bridge for intonation. Can't take the wrap around, non adjustable bridge/tailpiece.

For me, if it's a Gibson, with P90s, it's going to be a Les Paul of some kind.

I don't traffic in the more expensive guitars, like R*s, etc. Most expensive I did was a Classic T.

So I went for Bang for the buck, my '11 60s Tribute. And what's better than a GT with P90s? Well nothing.
Tis a little thinner than the average LP, and mine is light, as this year was well chambered. Used to have 4 P90s guitars. This is the only one I have left, as it's the only one I need. ,

I could also go with something like this as well

AND, if you like SGs, I had one of these before. FANTASTIC guitar, 60s Tribute SG. Me and SGs just don't get a long. I've tried, but we don't fit. Find one used.
