I have an empty space on my right shoulder that I have been looking to get inked. Today I had a little search around the internet on tattoos, examples and their meanings. After an hour of Google meandering this lead to rather worrying and somewhat distressing visit to an Aryan brotherhood website.

I got sidetracked as to the tattoos I was interested in and started reading about a tattoo a drummer I once knew had on his elbow. It was a spiders web design. Now , I'm sure he only had it because he thought it was cool or a bit punky but it actually has a far more sinister meaning as a prison tattoo. I understand that in some cases it means that you have committed some form of racially motivated attack or even killed someone.Upon further research I found that lots of popular tattoos have uncomfortable meanings rooted in prison and gang culture. Such as Eagles, Birds, some skull designs etc.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my findings with you and say that I'll be researching my next tattoo extensively as I certainly wouldn't want a connection to groups like that Aryan lot permanently under my skin. Those guys seem to hate everyone who doesn't look and think exactly like they do.

I went with a nice Celtic knot, with a tribal-style sun around it. :D

1) wear sunscreen and it slows the fading
2) get them reinked every so many years
3) it doesn hurt at all, depending on where you get them.

i'm terrified of needles, but tattoos never phased me. the only reason i don't have more is because the wife hates them:wtf:

oh, and who doesnt love ass antlers?

My sister used to date a guy with the 'Spiderweb On the Elbow' tattoo. He had no idea what it meant until he was deployed overseas. One of his commanding officers pointed it out to him.

Armpit is brutal! Mine are all under a T-shirt - the one on my left shoulder wraps all the way around and just barely comes in to the underside of my bicep at the armpit. It swelled up right then and there, and actually caused ink to bleed in to the swollen portion. It doesn't look terrible, but boy did it hurt!

Yeah the one on my left shoulder blade reaches into the area almost into my armpit. Wasn't too painful, but didn't feel great, I'll tell ya. It's just a spot that nobody goes into, let alone a vibrating needle. The only spot that 'hurt' was right on my shoulder blade. I had been doing a cut after a few months of hard workout so aside from the muscle there was just bone for him to grind on. Fatty areas hurt the least.

The one on the back of my neck was weird.

The tattoo itself is great but he kept hitting a nerve on the back of my neck that made my left knee shake. Was pretty funny.

I never take the 'traditional' meaning of some tattoos in account. Anybody who gets a meaningless tattoo though seems a little off to me. I know tattoos are a big fad right now, but you gotta remember, it is forever, so hopefully you don't just get drunk and get 'whatever' inked on your body.

I know a few people with tattoos they deeply regret, usually because of the 'I'm drunk, lets get a tattoo' thing.

Elbow spiderwebs have prison meaning, but they aren't limited to AB ad they aren't even limited to criminals. They have never had a solid meaning and have become deluted since so many others get them. Usually they are worn by people trying to project a tougher, street credible image, but only because they were once upon a time more common with convicts (jail or prison). Stuff that's a no-brainer to avoid is anything specifically nazi such as lightning bolts and swazis.

... or black iron crosses... The iron cross got a new lease on life with the 'chopper' craze, but still makes a pretty fascist looking tattoo.

It's funny about the swastika too, since it has so many ancient positive meanings for many other cultures.

There is an artist from my ex-wife's home town who is trying to 'bring back' the proper meaning of the swastika *there was even a town named Swastika in Canada until the war, and the renamed it*.

He's got thousands of them tattooed all over his body. He's pretty odd ball... Well.. More than just odd ball... He's also got a vagina tattooed on his forehead and calls himself Man-Woman. Everything he owns is yellow, and he pays some dude to dress up in a giant skull costume with a monocle and top hat to follow him around, named Mr. Death. He also stores pickled body parts of his deceased family members in his home.

He had a cool website up, dunno if it still exists, but here's another. We actually studied him in art back in college. Interesting dude.

Guitars are hard as hell for a tattoo artist to draw. If you want em to look like the real deal, you might want to reconsider. The only guitar tattoo I've ever seen that i really liked was done by Corey Miller *he's on LA Ink now, so I doubt he'd be affordable, or available....
