My First Les Paul was called a Les Paul Junior Special Plus. It was a 2001 model I bought brand new. It has a flat flamed maple top about 1/4 inch thick, a 60's slim taper neck and a tummy cutout. The pickups are 490R/498T. These pickups seemed to be on almost all the Les Paul's I had tried such as the Studio and DC Standard, Standard. Being that it was my first actual Gibson Les Paul and coming from a Strat copy for 6 years prior I simply accepted that the guitar sounded a certain way. I called that the Les Paul sound because to me it was a Les Paul and it sounded that way.
Recently I swapped the A2 magnet in my Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro, my SG Special neck pickup, to an A5 magnet and hated it so I swapped it back again. On that subject I do notice posts on here of people liking the BB #1, #2 over their original BB Pro's (if they owned a post 2001 Standard). Now all BB 1 and 2 are the same winds as BB Pro Neck and Bridge, just different magnets and potted, Correct?
So are people not liking BB Pro's moreso because of the A5 magnets whereas the "traditional" (man is that a registered trade mark now lol) 490R and '57 classics have A2's and people were used to that sort of sound from Les Pauls up until the BB Pro's?
Are BB Pro's THAT hideous? I'm not understanding the general dislike for them. I have not tried them however I am contemplating some sort of BB in place of my neck Seymour Duncan AlNiCo II Pro. I am aiming for more 'bite' so the uneven coil winds will give that, and I like A2 sounds so I'm thinking a BB#1 or #2 or a BB Pro Neck or Bridge and swapping the magnet so it's a potted BB#1 or #2 then see.
