PREVIOUSLY...
(Ok so when my account was suspended, had a conversation with both guys. Really cool overall. Didn't think about the websites policy or those that run it. Should've never brought politics into guitar building/music. That's is supposed to be the escape from it isn't it? Anyway instead of focusing on the template itself, I brought a bunch of civil war bs into it, north vs south etc. No more of that. Opinions are just that....opinions. an opinion has no factual evidence whatsoever, so I'd like debating/arguing to be at a minimal. Wouldn't want anyone to get in trouble over a personal view on my post. Not that it would be my fault, but I'd still feel like my forum would have a lot to do with it.)

PRESENTLY......

Ok so I've got a good idea. So my first attempt was on a guitar case. I printed out a template that looked like this...
confederate-BW~2.jpg

I didn't use anything but the stars. Cut em out with an exacto knife, and used the holes as the template when I sprayed over it. Problem is, the template can only be as big as a piece if printer paper, so I decided to try another route.

So to start out, I need to go to each corner and Mark out where I would want the stripes. Basically use a ruler and for each corner, I'd pencil a certain number of inches. Like this....
FK4F02ZID2XB1KB.LARGE~2.jpg

You can just barely see the pencil lines at the both ends of each of the thin masking tape. So at this point, stars are the only thing I'm worried about. So I came up with the FINAL solution....
Upon my future plans of building guitars, I decided it'd be a lot better (and fun) to build my own telecasters, Les Paul's etc. instead of spending upwards of 1500 for both. (Yes I know they are more affordable than that, but I'm just using as an example.) So I found body templates using a meterial I think is called mdf? Sorta like particle board and I think it would be perfect! All's I gotta do, is find the right size stars (probably stickers to trace around) for each size flag template I want. As big as a 335 or as small as a fiddle. Basically, instead of painting the mdf, I'd just cut out the pieces I'd spray into, using it as a piece by piece, step by step process. Lines, stripes, background, stars etc. All in an mdf board. Following in order. Any thoughts, comments, suggestions at all? Not sure where'd I'd get those stars for the larger size, nor how I'd be able to precisely place them. I'd probably have to dilute the adhesive side in water to lessen the sticky, and slowly adjust it until it's perfect, then when it's dry and stuck on, I'd trace around it with a pencil, then cut them out. Obviously this would not work as well with carve tops or arch tops, but Les Paul Jr, telecaster, Paul Jr tele hybrid? That's what I plan on building anyway, so that's not really a set back. For the carve tops, I'd probably have to get some type of meterial that is used for templates like you'd buy at Walmart (but blank and not cut) so I'd be able to get my own shape.

COMMENTARY IS HIGHLY NEEDED.

I'm wondering if you should just paint a white cross first. Mask the edge of the red cross inside, then add the stars, also as a mask, and paint the red. Peel off the masking, including the stars, and you are done.

Templates are hard to use becuse they must be tight to the surface and not allow the paint to seep underneath.

Cheers Peter.

When I don't have a hard template for something, I make it out of paper via a blueprint or plan, cut around it as carefully as possible and stick it to some MDF, which I also cut carefully around and sand to the critical edges.
It looks to me as if you will need to place some paper stars and outline them on some MDF, then cut to the inside lines, sanding and filing to those lines as carefully as you can.

As far as the bars go, it would be a fairly simple matter to take a rectangular piece of MDF and outline the X portion in the desired width and cut to that outline.

That's exactly what happened to my first attempt. I thought about sticking it to the top, but the paint was still tacky and didn't want it to peel off. I did it all within about 30-45 minutes. Surprisingly, it didn't peel from being too thick or painted too fast. After applying some satin poly brush on over it, (just to protect the paint/stickers) it has a smooth finish. I also find that minwax poly tends to age really nicely! Here's the underspray mishap.

Kinda shoddy but I only spent about 100$ for the case. Honestly I was just testing my methods for a future guitar finish plan. Thanks for the input!

I would take a hike over to your local arts and crafts store and browse through the stencil selection and look for stars. They should have a decent selection of sizes to fit the scale you’re working on.

Grab a few razor knives and some large card stock sheets and make your templates out of that. It’s easy to line up/stack multiple layers and you should be able to get it to lay pretty flat. They might even have sheets of plastic for making a permanent stencils there.

" Problem is, the template can only be as big as a piece if printer paper ..."

Most printers will have some option to use multiple pages to print a large photo. It may be deep in the menu somewhere ... do an internet search for printing posters on your particular printer model.

I am doing a project very similar to this right now with this kind of flag. The entire face of the guitar will have this graphic. My plan is to paint white first, then mask that with two different masks...one for blue and then one for red.
I'm having a local sign shop cut the masks from vinyl. To make this more complicated this will be on an archtop guitar.....so the vinyl will have to conform.

I have not used it, but the guy who created it is one of those mad scientists north of US.
