I would like to add banjo to a couple of our songs. I have a 5 string but cannot play anything on it. I have tried and failed over and over. I am thinking of buying a 6 string but am clueless. Do any of you have any insight? Preferably an acoustic electric....$500 or close.
I’ve had a couple six-string banjos. Kept getting orchestra pit calls that required banjo.
Of the cheap ones, I had a Dean I liked, and a Gold Tone that was OK.
Of the nice ones I had a nice Deering that was tits, and a Deering Goodtime that was OK. They all sounded the same in the final analysis. The Dean had a humbucker under the head. Only a high zoot Deering with piezo AND magnetic pickups actually will pass for a banjo at volume. The Eagles just mic’d up whoozee’s 5-string.
After I quit pit work and moved I offed whatever aux instruments I had. Guitar is enough. I like guitar. Bass, banjo ukulele, mandolin etc. I never got much facility on enough to actually like. Just tools for specific jobs.
You can also just weave a 1” strip of paper through the strings on your guitar, back up against the bridge on the playing side to suffice for one song, if that’s all that’s required.
