Find a Line6 Variax 300. You can get them for $300-$350. Run it off of 6 AA battery pack, since you're not going to use it much. Gets a GREAT banjo sound and you don't have to relearn. Plus Dobro, sitar, etc.
Saw a guy one night who had some sort of pedal that made his guitar sound like various other instruments I bet that's what he was using.

I was going to warn you that real banjo players frown at the mention of a six-string banjo. Looks like you’re already seeing that.

And here I thought there was nobody for them to look down on.

One time I forgot to lock my car and I had my guitars in the back seat. Some bastard came by and left a banjo.

It’s like an open G on the guitar

I would like to add banjo to a couple of our songs. I have a 5 string but cannot play anything on it. I have tried and failed over and over. I am thinking of buying a 6 string but am clueless. Do any of you have any insight? Preferably an acoustic electric....$500 or close.

After all those banjo jokes it's time for some real advice... :) If you want to get a banjo, get a 5-string resonator banjo. The only one in your price range with decent quality is a Deering Goodtime. As for learning, the old Earl Scruggs book is still available and a good start. Last part: Forget about all the ignorants... they don't know any better...:dude:

.

String and tune your banjo like a four string guitar. Play and record. It's not like you are trying to get bass lines out of the E and A guitar strings anyway. You might need different string gauges for the scale length to get there, experiment. A few Justin Johnson videos to inspire.
