Keep the original tuners and strap buttons just in case you need to resell one day (it'll preserve the value of the guitar better). Otherwise mod away! Stock is for lazy people and collectors ;)

String it up right. (see "proper way to string a guitar".)
Lube the nut with chap stick or graphite (pencil lead).
And like Joe Walsh says:
"Always tune up to pitch." meaning if the note is sharp,
tune it down flat, give the string a good tug,
and tune up to pitch.
This takes out any slack between the nut and the tuner.

(I recommend this Joe Walsh video series to everyone!)

Okay, I am a brand new guitar player, and just ordered a 2014 LP Classic in Wine Red. There is an extremely reputable guitar tech in Boston. I am considering having him make the following adjustments:

1 install strap locks ( any brand suggestions?)
2 install locking tuners ( brand suggestions?)
3 set up/ restring with nickel 9s.
The lighter strings are supposed to be easier for a new player, and they say the nickel plated strings offer a better sound for blues. Totally open for brand suggestions here as well.

So, it this a bad idea? I am not really concerned with resale value, buy does this help or hurt?

how could it possibly hurt if you see these things as improvements? I say go for it! :thumb:

btw I did the following things to my 2013 Traditional:

* amber switch tip
* Grover rotomatics
* bone nut installed
* JPPost 72 pickups installed
* rewired with braided shield to 50's wiring
* 500k CTS pots, Bumblebee caps
* Schaller strap locks

I now have the guitar of my dreams. as long as the mod is reversible, you're not doing any harm.

Yep learn to string it correctly and you won't or shouldn't have tuning issues.
Locking tuners only lock the string on the tuner and it can still go out of tune if the strings are binding in a poorly cut nut slot.Myself the original tuners do a fine job.
If it ain't broke don't fix it rule applies in this case.
Strap locks yes they are a good idea.
When you change strings you can use 10's and just top wrap over the tail piece and 10's will feel like 9's so it will be easier on your fingers when learning.

I agree with the idea that the strap locks (Whatever method/company seems best to you) are the only mod that's a must. I'd take the money you were going to spend on tuners and buy the most important accessory there is, a good quality tuner pedal.

Forget strap locks, got for a lock-it-strap. I decided against strap locks being on my guitar so I opted for lock-it-strap. Nothing fancy for me, just a plain black cotton strap with the special lock it ends. Works great and nothing needs to be changed on my LP. The rubber washer idea also works, I used to have them on my guitars (black washers from lowes) but now I use the lock it strap.
