NICE... forgot about that thread....

LOVE the stop block idea that totally rawks!!!

BUT... I was also wondering why it would be hard to do the cutout with the shop fox and now i get it....

but my build will negate that problem....

I'm not doing an "arched" binding channel in the cutout... binding is going to the same height the whole way around the guitar and there will be an SG esque bevel in the cutout area :thumb:

I don't build "replicas"... I build L.P. styled gutiars ;) (too many guys out there already making too exact replicas for me to throw my hat in THAT ring LOL)

HOWEVER... i and DEFINATELY going up to Grizz in Muncy and picking one of these up!!!

Well that makes life a lot easier. Shop Fox it is. :thumb: Its really a great tool to have around. I find I use it quite a bit. Thats why someday I am looking to get an industrial pin router. Baby steps though. I can only afford one major purchase at a time and my last one was a full out dust collection system. :D

Thanks man...

Building a Neckthru is a different religion than what is normally preached here... which is why i figured I'd do a build post on it.. Its not easier or harder, until you put a drop top on one.. Then i can tell you from experience.. its MUCH easier to put a drop to on a set neck than a neck through.

you COULD simply cut a liine across the neck at the body join and slap your top on, then plane the top down to your neck level.....I know several high end builders who do this... but... to me... its like cutting a little notch at the base of a tree.. you just weakend the tree! My intgerlocking method, while a giant PITA, makes me feel better about taking my customers money!!! LOL

THIS GUITAR is neckthru as well, however, was made like a standard neckthrough.... body wings added to a central core.... I used 1.75" thick black walnut for the wings and then added a 1/2" ample cap to them to mate to the 2.25" thick maple core.... Because it was designed to be painted, plain maple was used fr the wings and there was no need to create the interlocking neck joint.

The profile of the blank looked very similar to the korina blank i posted in the first post.. however, in this case.. the wings were added level with the top of the center section, leaving a trough between them where the neck angle fell away, the wings where then planed down to the neck angle.. MUCH simpler!

THAT method only works for carved toped guitars like les pauls.... a guitar with a flat top would look stupid with the body sudenly angling away after the end of the freboard... On falt topped guitars, you make your neck brake at the end of hte body, then add a triangular shim onto the center section to continue the fretboard rise over the body..

you can see the shim added to a flat topped guitar in this pic. it starts right were the top horn meets the body.. the shim is simply the scrapwood "wedge" cut from the neck as you cut away the neck angle, trimmed down just a bit wider than the fretboard, turned around and glued over the body. you cut the excess off with a razor saw later.

Ok.... got the dam board bound.. 3 ply .06W .02b .02W

the two .020's were laminated and glued in on a ledge first, then the .06 X.25 was glued to the side of the boad and over the smaller pieces.. the corners were 45'd..

think it looks pretty dam good for a retard with some acetone and an exacto knife....

still got some final cleanup.. but we'll get to that as everyting else is getting cleaned up!

These is a set of Andy DePaul inlays btw. I usually do my own... but.. when you get right down to it.. I can't MAKE this set of inlays for what andy charges when you count in the labor involved.. simply can't do it.... there is a bit of work involved before you can set 'em in clean up and gluing the pieces together.. they come glued, but they break apart as you take them off the backer... what i do is then assemble and glue the pieces back together on a 12" radius scrap covered in plastic wrap...

+1, that does look great, and I'd expect some pretty good sustain and it to be reasonably light for a Les Paul. Wish I had those skills, but that's years down the road if at all.. :) Good luck with it, be anxious to see how it turns out! :thumb:

Don

Haha as if! It looks great!!!!!

BTW, if you want to see binding by a retard with acetone and exacto (who cut himself with the knife :D) then see my thread..

Can't wait to see it completed and prettier!!!!

Got the carve roughed in... I used the "terrace" system ala Ex-Nihlio and then blended with the carbide donut on the angle grinder.... however, this is a carved top hybrid of a PRS top and a LP top.., not a traditional LP top... so i modified the lines a bit.. it needs blended in, the sg style bevel on the lower horn cut and the knob pads cut down before it can be bound...

the black thing to the right is a "floor Sweep" for the dust collection system.. it makes a good dust catcher when using the angle grinder.. i just clamp it to the side of the bench...

I have to get a duplicarver next year.......... and i also have to expand the shop and get a dedicated downdraft table...

The repair work keeps the whole place goin... but it also backs up the custom jobs! Gotta get this ting into paint soon!

I got the terracing done for the 5-ply binding done for the headstock this weekend..

its a giant PITA and I don't normally terrace three ply binding, but this is five ply and a lot thicker ~ .16" (.06W, .04B, .02w/b/w) it makes it easier in some ways and harder in others.. but it also gives alot more wood contact surface with the binding for a more secure glue job.

Great work! I'm watching this thread very closely, because I have plans for building something somewhat similar when I get the dough to buy the wood for it.
