Here's the one I bought off Craigslist with HSC for $350.00 not a scratch on her...

One thing I'd like to add here for your Epi guys who are considering buying one of these or already have one and are considering modding it.

1st thing, regular 500k CTS or Gibson pots will NOT fit the holes, the Epi uses small diameter pots so the holes must be reamed about 2mm. Not a problem but you must be prepared to do so. I recommend a reamer but you could do it with a larger drill but be careful you could screw it up if you do it wrong.

2nd thing, the wiring is a nightmare in an Epi. Gut it all and put a new toggle switch in and also get some vintage style braided two conductor wire to run to the pots and jack.
Replace the pots with some good CTS type audio taper and get some PIO caps, either Luxe Bees or Sprague Vit. Q, etc. finally get a good set of pickups.

3rd thing. My Lindy Fralins have wide magnets much larger than the Epi magnets. When I tried to push the pickups in place with the covers they would not fit on the narrow width. It took a bit to figure out what the problem was but I soon saw the magnets hanging over the edge of the baseplate. This added width causes the covers to spread when mounted over the bobbin. It will not fit in the tight tolerance milled into the top. I thought, shit.... am I going to have to rout out the pickup slots a bit larger??? I wasn't prepared to do that. So I got a small sanding drum on my dremel and took some of the plastic off the inside of the covers, I ground down the long sides only from the bottom edge up to about 4mm from the bottom. This gave me just enough clearance to slip over the wider magnets on the Fralins and not cause the O.D. of the covers to be any wider than they are meant to be. After dremeling and a little scraping with a razor blade the pickups dropped right in and the covers went on nice and tight with no gaps where the wood and the covers meet. Just an FYI guys.

BTW_ I did put the pickguard back on after these shots were taken. Also, I took off the thick poker chip around the toggle (that sucker is held on with some serious sticky tape, take your time and it will come off), I had a Historic one that I added. Also when I installed the Jonesy pots I added some pointers I had laying around and also had a spare Historic amber switch tip.

I do love the Fralins, man they sound good. Almost as good as my R8 with OTP PAFs.

Everyone should have the 56 Epi Goldtop in their collection. Great guitar for the money.

That really is a sweet guitar, Texasburst. :applause:

I knew about the pots, but not about the Fralins. Thanks for the heads up!

just when I thought I was done buying guitars for a while..............

Crap, me too... :mad2: Wonder if they tested a rumor to see what the response would be before actually stopping production.

with the stock pickguard and switch ring. I need to get a Gibson pickguard, not a fan of the Epi guard but it'll do for now.

I'll have to post a pic of the Gibson switch ring later. I do like the gold Gibson knobs over those dark Epi knobs.

If you really want a GT I know of two in Connecticut

Sam Ash in New Haven and Greewich Music in Greenwich CT

These are Epi GT's not Gibsons

Isn't it amazing how the current tailpiece/knob positioning on Epiphones look more historically correct than on Gibson Historics up until this very year?

I noticed something today when I was in a guitar store here - they had a Epiphone Flying V hanging there, and it had an ABR-1 bridge. Now why in God's name don't they put those on the Les Pauls? I'd much prefer that over the bridges used on the current Les Pauls.

But on topic, hadn't it been for the sparkle-like finish I'd be having major GAS for this right now.

Thanks!!!

(And it will be available by March 6!)

Buy Epiphone Les Paul 1956 Goldtop Electric Guitar | Solid Body Electric Guitars | Musician's Friend

EDIT: I still believe this is one of the best stock model Les Pauls Epiphone made. Those P-90's deliver a crisp, punchy sound...and it's the one Epiphone that even hardcore modders don't dig into right away....;)

DAMMIT Sentry. You have me GASsing so bad right now. I may have to act on this one, I'm a sucker for a sub-$500 guitar!

i have a theory bout this guitar... It's not pretty but it's what I believe that some ppl might do.
The 56 was removed right before the slash gt was released right? (I'm not sure but I think this was the case)
Well, what if it was pulled back to create a growing interest in the 56.
They would have a win/win situation.
Either people would love the Slash GT and buy it, plus that it would be the "only" cheap GT so people would buy it of that reason as well. Or as now was the case, many people would backlash at the slash gt and be upset that the 56 was gone.
What do they do then? Reintroduce the 56, saying something like. "Hey, We listened to you guys, now go buy more of our 56's"
And many people will go. "Hmm I really want a affordable GT but I don't want the slash hysteria that has been going around. I think I'll buy this."
I sure as hell know that I'm considering it, if only Sweden could get a decent distributor that doesn't double the price of every item.

What ever the reason is, I'm still happy that they brought it back. I love a good GT with p90s. don't know why but they speak to me.

Ohh and by the way.
Swedish Retailprice: $707
Musicians Friend: $499

I hate living in this country sometimes.
