Nearly Unrecognizable Axl Rose Gives Lackluster Performance - Amplifier

Axl Rose isn't looking anything like the lithe rock star he was at the height of his fame. When Guns N' Roses played at the Rock in Rio festival in Brazil this week, the 49-year-old sole original member cut a figure that was a far cry from the lean and mean body that made him a hard rock pin-up in the late '80s.


Garbed in a bulging yellow raincoat, Rose obscured his puffy face with sunglasses and a black hat. In response to an inquiry about his apparent weight gain, a rep for Rose said: "You are the first to mention this. If anything, it might be his time off from touring."

After coming onstage two hours late, the tardy Rose voiced his concerns to the audience about prancing around a rain-soaked stage, thereby excusing himself from too much physical exertion. "I'm going to try to focus on singing rather than running around like an idiot. I'm better at being an idiot. We want everybody to be careful." Contrary to his stated goal, Rose struggled to keep time with his backing band even more than he struggled to move around the stage. Although the singer treated fans to a variety of G 'N R classics, a lot of fans left the concert likely feeling stymied, having waited two hours in the rain just to watch Axl Rose turn in a slovenly performance.

Which is to say: His physique isn't the only thing that is unrecognizable from his early Guns days. As our own Daniel Kreps pointed out after viewing this clip from the Rock in Rio performance, his voice sounds "like our friends belting it out during a game of Guitar Hero 3."

i can not express the disappointment i felt when i heard him sing the first note. wtf, was he drunk? skip to 2:10 and let it roll.... son.... i am disappoint.

His look and sound has gone downhill pretty swiftly, even compared with last year.

Time passes, people get old, even celebrities. I suspect he is capable of getting back to last years standard. I like GNR, but I am not convinced that his voice was ever spectacular in a live setting to be honest, the bar is not terribly high to begin with.

I think we've all changed over 20 years, but WOW. Why would he do this to himself? Did this tour drop out of thin air? He could've hit a treadmill or something. The raincoat is creepy.

I believe, at the time of the Axl before pic, he was using some 'nutritional' supplements the side effects of which help keep one's body weight down (by eliminating one's appetite for food, not destruction).

I love the concept of having all that water around electric gear. The plate voltage on a single tube amp will run north of 470V. I like the hat DJ's wearing, reminds me of someone, but I just can't put my finger on it...

I'm not expecting him to still be doing lines off strippers asses, but he could have hit a treadmill for a few months. All I play are bars and I don't want to play for even 20 people and look like that. I don't want to walk down the street like that, but I'm vain I guess. A few lbs is one thing, but the man looks bloated to no end.

I agree. His job is to write, record and perform music and, if you're a performer, part of your job is to look good while doing it. It's not like he's working some other part time job in addition to being a rock star and can't find the time. Hell, that last album took 13 years to put out - he couldn't find the time somewhere in there to do a few situps?

You have no idea. When he use the ENTIRE set, it also included a five piece electronic kit and 36" gong in back of him. THREE kick drums! wtf???
