A photograph of an Australian quokka has got the whole world smiling.

The photo, which one commentator said was a surefire way to “end depression”, was taken on Western Australia’s Rottnest Island, a native habitat for quokkas.

The snap of the quokka, a small tree-climbing wallaby, was taken by tourist Campbell Jones, 21, during a visit to the island off the south-west coast of Western Australia.

Mr Jones said he had been cycling on the island and stopped to take out his camera when the quokka approached and seemed only happy to co-operate with his photographic endeavours.

The quokka appears to wear a huge smile as it jumps towards Mr Jones’ camera.

Enjoy, not all of our Animals are out to kill you. :laugh2: :laugh2: :D

:cheers2:

So that's where Mr Jones has been...out playing with critters. Anyone tell him his ol' lady is foolin' around with Billy Paul yet?

The quokka uses it's powerful hands and claws to tear coconuts apart like a head of lettuce.

(I made that up)

Quokka? I've never even heard of a quokka! Must be some newly discovered way to die! We were lucky to get this photographic warning before the cameraman met his fate!

Cute little bugger,isnt he/she??

Yes they are but fairly small.

Dutch explorers named the island where they are found "Rottnest", meaning Rats Nest as thats what they thought they were. Probably never heard of Marsupials back then.

Thank goodness all we have in North America is rattlesnakes and grizzly bears. And mountain lions. And wolverines. Nothing as dangerous as a wallaby that has learned to climb trees. Not to mention the deadly bandicoot, with it's pointy snout.

This is one of the first pics that turned up when I searched for quokka:

The "cuteness" is just a well-evolved hunting adaptation, to lure in the unsuspecting.

Eventually you're going to see a merging of the evolutionary paths of wombats and funnelwebs. Then human extinction.
