For those of the West Oz persuasion there is Perry Ormsby, who is an excellent luthier. He selling his own pickups now, too. Previously his pickups were custom wound for each customer and their instrument, but he's started some standard lines, too.

I would kill to play one of Perry's instruments.

They are as nice as anything I've seen. Just beautiful.

Ormsby Guitars - Custom Guitars from Perth, Western Australia - Electric Guitars, Handmade Guitars... the worlds best guitar!

Seeing as you didn't post the link my friend :D

I thought you were from Melbourne :D

Nope, I'm the Mexican around here :thumb:

I've had some work done on my '34 L-50 (regluing braces and fixing a few cracks) by the guys at Real Guitars in Glen Iris in Melbourne, and it came back playing great and solid as a rock. I've seen some of the basket cases they've fixed and they do some amazing work. They'll let you play any of the vintage gear on the walls too!

I've heard really good things about James Mumford too, and James Cargill.

Hi guys I have just got my new set of the SD slash sig pickups and are putting them in my LP copy guitar,im planning on taking my guitar to a local tech (no sure which one, but the guys at Cargil Custom Guitars look good and would probably know alot about these pickups as they are agents for SD) and was wondering if there is any particulars with the setup i should ask for.Ive read about different pickup heights, pots ect and i have no idea what that means i got these pickups to get more of his sound out of my guitar and just want them to sound the best they can.Any help would be appriecated and will help me look like i know what im talking about to the tech. Great Thread BTW.Thanks

You'll want to have them change the pots to 500 k while you're at it, if the stock pots are not 500 k. Quite often the stock pots are 250-300 k. This is important on the volumes, because the higher the value of the pot, the more treble signal from your pickup gets pushed through to the cable. This makes the guitar less muddy, and makes the volume pot more usable.

Regarding the wiring options, I have no idea what Slash used, so I've got nothing to add there. I like the 1950s wiring because it retains treble better as you turn the vol down.

The Cargills are a "firm" in the old fashioned sense. Son James and father Merv operate in a backyard garage. Merv is a bona fide legend who lists R. Blackmore & J. Page amongst his clients, although now largely retired. None better, James will sort you.

Never used them for a guitar. But I have used them for warranty work on an amp. They were useless. Not only did they waste a week getting a warranty work number from the manufacturer, they then blamed the manufacturer for the delay. Told me some cock n bull story about the manufacturer being notoriously slow. I don't suppose they expected me to take them at their word and write a very stern but polite e-mail to the manufacturer complaining about their service. Naturally, I courtesy copied the shop into this correspondence. The manufacturer put the blame firmly back on the shop, and not by hearsay. They sent me the date-stamped fax they'd sent the shop a week earlier.

Oh-f**king-snap, as they say.

I could have been mollifed about the delay if they'd just owned up to the fact that they'd forgotten. Shit, sorry mate, we f**ked up. Instead they tried to blame a third party who had - for once :D - acted quickly and blamelessly.

I put this down to the local management team in that particular Billy Hyde shop in Perth. I don't want to generalize this experience to the entire franchise. But I wouldn't deal with the Perth shop again without a really good reason. Like something I really wanted was on a serious, serious discount. But as far as service is concerned, forget it.
