Are the CC models worth the added cost?

3) Maybe sws1 can confirm or refute this, but to my knowledge, the original owners/artist of the burst in question do get SOME compensation per guitar sold. That is also factored into the upcharge of the guitar.

It's pretty much an insignificant part of the uncharge. The aging is far more costly and it can take days per guitar. Also, there is extra R&D involved in a CC since they are testing color samples, modeling the neck, programming the CNC machines for a unique guitar, etc. VS a normal TH which has already had all the R&D done.

I don't know which ones have the smallest necks. I believe the Jeff Hanna is thinner. I don't think the Nicky is that big, although it is a touch wider than others, strangely enough.

Mine, shown above, will not be a thin neck. Not a baseball bat, but probably a bit fuller than other '59s. And with really comfy shoulders.

Hanna's was beautiful. I enjoyed it 100 times more than Nicky or Donna. I think that one is a sleeper in the CC line.

Very cool they are doing one of your guitar. I hope they do it justice. it's lovely.

Ed King said after about 80 his CC went a stray.

"EK: They'd seen the guitar before and were anxious to do a run of 300. It started out OK, but before it got to #080, the finishes weren't right. Some of the necks were far too big. But my prototype is as close to the whole package as they'd ever get."

A used Shanks is only marginally more $$$ than a used R9. And in my opinion they are well worth it if you are looking for an aged guitar with a broken-in feel. Tone will depend on each individual guitar, but most CS guitars will sound outstanding.

kingsxman, since you have an R8, a Shanks or Co. may be more your liking or less so. It won't be a bigger step up from say a typical Gibson USA guitar....flame away.

Something is bugging you about your R8, eh? You know I love your guitar's top but you should really just go for what you truly want to have. The price is really the price, but with a bit of haggling and patience you will find the exact guitar you're truly looking for, and for a reasonable price (buyer's market).

a gold top CC they had at Chicago Music Exchange a year or 2 ago was the best playing and sounding modern Les Paul I've ever messed with. I stick to the vintage stuff, but that was good enough to make me go hmmm. It was the only Les Paul i've played that had the 50s neck feel right, I've played a lot of CCs that weren't for me, but they were all a cut above the historics and CS stuff IMO

I think this is what/where I heard this...

They go "A stray" and don't keep to the plan....

Anyone remember that crap age job they did on a CC? the one with the Razor apparatus?

How bout the pencil mark Skinners? That was hilarious. What did Jon get, like 4 of those before it was right?

Yep...THAT was inexcusable. Again, overall, I like, and in some cases have preferred these guitars. They have not been without their issues though. Like sws1 said, maybe things are changing for the better. Time will tell.

I will say, that aged ACE I had WAS different. The neck profile felt much more like any of the Bursts I have had my hands on, and the frets were cool. It did play MUCH differently than a typical R whatever. The top kicked ass too.

Can I also say for the hundredth time. Will they please do a 1960 CC (I know the Shanks was a transition). Possibly the Kreiger Burst?

They have done a '60 CC.

CC #18 - Dutchburst.

Gibson Custom: Collector

And they did the Joe Walsh Artist (which resembles the tangerine burst photo) too. They're still out there....

The tone is in the precise razor work which allows the vintage to seep out, slowly.

To answer the OP's original question: no.

I would like to check out a Shanks. They have pretty consistently been the ones I've heard about that have been really "worth" it.

Nothing really bugging me about my R8 other than the aging thing. I think you probably remember from another thread how I was considering the Historic Makeovers players discount for it (as well as looking at aged 60's reissues).. I couldnt be without it as my band starts up our first gigs so I coudlnt take advantage of that and now that option is done. I have a local guy who will maybe refin it and shave the neck a hair (local luthier) but I dont know that I want to go that route either.

It plays great and sounds great. SO....just looking at all options. Honestly, I've had so many R8's and R9's over the last 5 years and they all have been very good. In the end the guitar doesnt make as much of a difference as what you do with it. I should just realize this and I'd be better off. LOL.

From what I've seen of the CC#5 Donna run over the last 2 years you get good looking ones and some bad looking ones.
I don't know what many of the CCs sound like, have played different ones over the years though and I don't think the extra $$ are worth it compared to the R7s R8s R9s.
I think the Nicky run was/is pretty consistent in looks compared to the above.

Definitely worth it for me. The minor details in each individual CC makes me appreciate the amount of work that has gone into it.

Probably the only 3 I ever need for now.

I have seen later CC16, probably in triple digits were too yellow. Almost lemon burst rather than dirty lemon.
