Half as Good? Subjective.
Music is subjective anyway. The only thing that isn't subjective is math. And then when you get up into physics they make up theories and massage the math to justify their arguments.
Malikon has the best answer yet I've seen to one of these threads. Yes, you can mod an Epiphone to sound as good as a Gibson. Some or a lot of Epiphones play as well as a Gibson if they've had a proper setup and a fret level and fret polish. After it's all said and done, depending on the Gibson model you're comparing it to (Not a Billy Gibbons GT or something), you have two very similar guitars and you've probably spent near the same amount of money.
Then it comes down to pride of ownership. I wouldn't be caught dead driving an old rusted out '83 Honda Civic when somebody else could care less. There are people that wouldn't be caught dead driving my 2002 Ford pickup that I love. I own both an Epiphone and Gibson right now. Right now the Epiphone reminds me of a bastard child that would only make you cringe because when you look at him you see your wife's infidelic one-night-stand night of drunken debauchery flaunted in your face. I can't sell the damn thing fast enough. Sure the kid is an "A" student and doesn't get in trouble but you still don't treat him the same. (No I don't have a bastard son)
