But I'm just an old (70 years next month) "has been" guy who has been playing for 55 years. Playing guitar has provided me with some awesome experiences during that time, and with a lot of cool stories to tell.

This is just a little "pay back" thing to help a youngster who deserves it.

It arrived.... in just the case!

and no additional packing....
But the guitar was intact, thankfully.

A bit scruffy looking and with the metalwork needing some TLC

A clean and polish, and the metalwork cleaned up with silver polish.

A new set of strings.... action adjusted, and then the intonation set up nicely.

Tested..... and everything works very nicely.

Then I made the phone call to young George's mother and let her know what I had done, but not to tell him. They arrived 10 minutes later, and George was presented with his new guitar. He loved it !

Mission accomplished.

I've had a guitar turn up in nothing but a flimsy soft case wrapped in a dustbin bag before!

The guitar was fine fortunately and in a way, because it's obvious what it is, I wondered if the couriers might actually take the necessary care...

You know I wondered that too, being shipped in only a case, whether couriers were a little more careful. Maybe. Still risky though, and the case though it looks in good shape, can sure get beat up easily enough.

This one was delivered by Parcel Force. I was outside watching for the van at the time, and went to meet him. He had the guitar case in the cab beside him!

He was obviously taking care of it, and nicely warm too instead of in the cold in the back.

Guitar looks to be pretty good too

It was surprisingly good for its age. There was very little evidence of it having been played, even though it is a 10 year old instrument.

Not a single ding anywhere. No fret wear at all.

All that was needed was:
Remove the old strings (they were extremely cruddy)
Clean and polish the body
Polish the metalwork
Polish the frets
I used a little metal polish (Brasso wadding) on the scratch plate to remove the tiny scratches.
A little mineral oil on the fingerboard (which was one of those with very dark rosewood)
New Strings (10s)
Graphite in the nut slots
Bridge height tweaked a little to get the action right (No need to adjust the truss rod)
Intonation was a little off, but easy to get right.

The case is a Stagg, in remarkably good condition too.
I am not sure what pickups are in this guitar, but it sounded good!

It turns out that the lad didn't even own a guitar of his own! The one that I had seen him playing in church a couple of weeks ago was borrowed from his mum.

Actually, this one isn't for me.
There is a young 15 year old at our church who plays and sings occasionally using an inexpensive acoustic with a pickup. He is already better than pretty good and shows a lot of promise. His eyes light up at my own LP....

He doesn't know it yet, but I am going to give this black Les Paul Custom to him as a gift, along with some lessons.

This story is very similar to how I came by my first guitar back in 1977. You've done a wonderful thing, Rod. Happy Christmas, sir.
