For me: New guitar = need x desire / disposable cash. Total numbers are a minor consideration. That being said I have 3 I regularly use, 2 I don't and one awaiting repair. Need and Desire very low atm.

NEVER SELL GUITARS!

If you HAVE to limit the amount of kickass guitars you have, pick your second best one, that guitar is now the gate keeper.

Any future guitar has to be better than that your current #2, in perpetuity. Eventually you run out of ability to find another keeper.

I like that system. I guess that's what I've done unwittingly. I haven't found anything better than my main 3, so as a result I haven't bought a guitar in about 2 years. And FWIW the last guitar I bought is in the main 3, and realistically is either my main or #2 at worst. Which is unsettling because it cost about 1/5th of what each of the other two are worth.

I had lots of guitars, my wife had a photographic memory. NOTHING was safe, I would hide it for months, she'd see it in the basement and then the questions would start..... followed by "The Rule".

So I traded her. Much happier. More guitars, also.

Absolutely not.

I own four electric guitars (in working condition) right now and I have at least a dozen more circulating on my "to buy" list.

I buy for life.

For a while, when I was on a tear, I'd only sleep with a woman once and move on. Even if I liked her, I'd rarely go for seconds. This went on for about two to three years.

That depends, how long do I have to "out" one?

I regret getting rid of some guitars and amps just to justify getting something else. I’m never selling another guitar.

I only have 1 rule.....gotta make a few $$ of all aquisitions.

I'll buy anything that has value or has profit in it..........guitars,amps,basses, studio gear.

I do have 6 core electrics that I play and noodle on......

It took 20 years to get to 6 that are players.......although one of them was a recent find......

During those 20 years I've probably bought and sold 50 electrics, 40 amps,10 basses and literal pile's of speakers, pickips, stomps, mic, rack gear and mixers.

I've only let 1 guitar get away over the years and still regret it.
I have had this experience too.But i'm not a prolific scorer.I would say, with the few i did this with, i discovered down the road,i should not have let that one go at least 50% of the time. That really only amounts to a couple guits.A '79 Tobacco Custom and a beautiful '89 Vintage burst...oh yeah, that all white maple neck '75 Stratocaster!

Really, the answer is keep them all. Then, way way down the road, unload them if they do not float your boat.

The answer to the original op's question. They come in here, but today, they never leave.

Fixed for my personal experience.

Man, I have so many guitars, and there's only really 4 that I ever reach for. I almost have to convince myself to play the others, yet I don't want to unload them. Is that weird?
They're all great guitars, and I've loved them all during the honeymoon phase, bit then they get put in the "others" rack and collect dust for months on end and i go back to my favorite Tele, LP, 335, and Gretsch solid body single cut (I don't know what it is anymore... electromatic? It was cheap, less than a grand new, but its freaking stellar!)

So yeah, I'm now at the point where I won't bring one in without pushing one out because I know it'll likely sit and take up room like the rest of them.

I operate by, if I want it and can afford it without any financial strain, I get it

But, I do sell one or two every once in awhile so things don't get out of control, but I'm at least something of a guitar hoarder. I figure it's not a problem until they are all over the house and I trip over them. Right now they just take up a corner of one bedroom.
