The Mad Hatter's Tea Party, pp 7303, post #219079
"Of course. Making it in a teapot went out years ago in most homes in Britain."

True, sad... but true. In the early 1960s, tea bags made up less than 3 per cent of the British market, now they account for over 95 per cent of that market.

But why use ANY kind of bag when loose leaves make better tea? Teabags are an American invention from the early 1900's - an accident. New York tea merchant Thomas Sullivan began sending out samples to customers in small gauze bags tied with a string (instead of the usual tins). Rather than pouring the tea leaves into the pot as intended, the customers just dunked the bags in hot water.

When introduced to Blighty in the post war 1950's they went against the Brit's love of leaves. Loose leaf tea has been made for at least 3,000 years around the world, and since the mid-1600's in Britain, and just requires one tool – the teapot. But tea bags appealed to the Andy Capp laziness of many people in the UK... and let's face it, fodder for the masses (beverages, food, clothing, music, movies, art... whatever) has always eschewed taste and flavour and style in favour of convenience and cheapness in perfidious Albion.

Sure, leaf teas need a little longer to infuse than teabags. Teabags give up their dusty, musty, meagre flavour in an instant. The tealeaf has so much more to offer and takes its time to give up the subtleties of its flavour...

Tea bags use "fannings", the left-overs after larger leaf pieces are gathered for sale as decent leaf tea. As I said back in post #33 here, I mix Darjeeling and Assam loose leaf 50:50 and make it in the pot. It takes almost no effort, tastes way better than bag tea, barely costs any more and the leaves are 100% biodegradable.

This makes me "a tea nerd" and an "old person" according to all the pundits, but here's the thing... I could not care less what other folk think - I enjoy it and it doesn't hurt anyone else, heck, I even make sure the growers are "Fair Trade" and treat their workers reasonably well...

I am off for a Gin and pink (I prefer "in", and abhor ice)... toodle pip

Ugh.... I see this so many times. It is not called "Chai Tea," but simply "Chai." Chai means tea, so the extra "tea" is redundant.

Just thought I will be a bully today :)

I presume you are talking to Bigfoot410, or Rocco Crocco... so you need to forgive them the tautology, English is not their first language - they are 'Muricans. :laugh2:

Nothing fancy here, just Tetley's green tea (Decaf) about 4 cups a day.

Once I started with green tea I was able to discontinue anti-depressant medications and haven't looked back since!

These days I only drink green tea and water, thought it was about time to give an ageing body a bit of a chance~

I'm looking at coffee alternatives as I cannot really handle as much as I used to (I guess the acidity). Any types/brands that anyone can recommend that provide a nice energy boost, whether it's with or without caffeine?

:fingersx:

I have some green and oolong tea at work and they're okay, but wondering what else is out there that works.

Yorkshire Tea is the best tea. It's all I've bought for years. Pm me and I'll post you a box over

We used a tea pot at home. It meant the tea went further, using 2 bags for 4 people. Milk in the china cup first. Nowadays it's bag in the ceramic mug, milk after. I drink PG, Yorkshire or Tetley, whichever is on offer. I reccomend Tesco's everyday value tea. 20p for 40 tea bags. That's a bargain. Half a penny per cup. Save more with a tea pot. Your friends will never know the difference!

The only useful tea is black tea, in my [ridiculously arrogant] opinion. People think green tea is so healthful, but it's like tryptophan in turkey as a sleep aid - you'd have to consume an impossible quantity to get even the mildest benefit. To me, flavored teas are useless; their only benefit is their aroma. They usually have no related flavor.

That said, I drink it anyway.

We brought a tea habit home with us from the UK. We drink mostly Tetley's British Blend. For some reason, regular old Tetley's sold here in the US tasted different, even though they are both black tea. Hmm.

May have to try loose tea now that I've read this thread.

Oh yeah - milk goes in the tea always.

If anyone likes Yorkshire Tea here in the US, I have a ton. I prefer my PG tips. My friend kept sending me the wrong one from England.

I don't drink much tea these, I am more of a coffee drinker.

If anyone is interested let me know, you are more than welcome to have them.
