Just curious on you guys' thoughts on what formulas you've come up with! I've got (2) very old RCA 12AX7's that I've tried, (1) very old Westinghouse 12AX7, some Westinghouse, GE, RCA, Philips, Admiral, and Raytheon vintage tubes of the 12AT7 and 12AU7 varieties.
I've pretty much ruled out the 12AU7's as they just pretty much nuder (spelling?lol) the amp too much. I've found any combination of the 12AX7's to not make a huge amount of difference whether mixed, or in either slot. In any case, a decent improvement over the stock.
A killer combo that I've come across is an RCA in V1, and a Raytheon 12aT7 in V2. Yes, less gain than with (2) 12AX7's, but clearer more solid sounding gain, and with a deeper and tighter bark to the distorted tones!! Strong!!!! From there if I want more gain I just boost it with a good ole' Bad Monkey. Wouldn't mind a Maxon TS808, but don't know if its necessary, never tried one.
So, what are your "winning combos"?
