Hi,

New to the forum and looking to get back into a Les Paul. While I know every guitar has its own thing going on, I am wondering if anyone out there can comment on their experience and satisfaction with 2011 model 59 reissues.

Thanks

I'm sure someone can. Not sure why folks get hung up on a certain year though, good and not so good made every year. Go play as many as u can. Mine is an 07 and I wouldn't trade it for an 11' any day. Good luck in your search though.

I have one and it's very good. A one piece fingerboard, weighs less than 9lb as it should. The pickups are exactly to my taste and the tone is that of a 59 Les Paul. It kicks my Standard 08 into the next town's long grass although that one is a good supercharged metal rock instrument. They're ALL different but try for a hard rock maple top. Play before purchase unless you spot a top online that you MUST have and are willing to gambol.

I had a 2011 R9... it was quite light at 3,7kg, I didn't like it thou, had a toy, plastic feeling to it. I sold it pretty fast. Might've been that particular one...

was your toy feeling weight related or did it come from othe features of this particular axe? I haven't checked any 2011 R9s yet, but I owned one from 2010 which was just great at 3.8 KG. Was a sunrise teaburst VOS

My 2011 R9 is an awesome guitar, Its a VOS with the stuff wiped off. And its a player, solid resonant, and yes light.

As far as the year, there were no major spec changes between '09-11, so any of these years will be the same general guitar. Each has its own "personality" for lack of a better word, but you get the idea.

R9 is a fine guitar, and the top of the food chain for production run historics. I'd say try a couple to A/B them...if you can't find R9's, keep in mind R7-R8 are just cosmetically different tops for these years.

As to if YOU will enjoy it, no one can say. Keep in mind your on MLPF, so your opinions are likely strong one sided, and the negative are going to be limited. Buy what SOUNDS best, cosmetics are just that. I've owned beautiful guitars that didn't work, and ugly epiphones I loved.

The hard rock maple is a fine special guitar, but keep in mind the tops tend to be less flashy. Also, keep in mind that '03 on was only eastern maple on R series, so in general the wild tops ended...sure you'll find less flashy early '00s and unique post '02 models, just general trends.

Is that 100% true? Shouldn't the fret width be thinner on an R8 than an R9? If it's accurate at least. Isn't the neck slightly thicker on an R8 too?

Probably true, this is my hard rock maple top ... sorry for posting the same image I've used before but I didn't have time to take a new one tonight:

I'm pretty sure my R9 is a 2010 model, but 2009-2011 R9's have exactly the
same features as far as I know. It's easily the best guitar I've played, and the
other R9's I've played from 2009 and on have all been great guitars. Here's my
R9 just for fun:

Thanks for the info guys! Some awesome looking guitars.

I was asking about the 2011's simply because there is one that I was looking at on-line and thinking about buying.

I have had a Les Paul's over the years - miss my original deluxe badly.

I kind of got frustrated that for a while it seemed like the workmanship and playability between the Les Paul's I would look at was so inconsistent, I swore I would not buy one without playing.

I broke that rule and recently bought a R7 on-line and LOVED it. It was everything I wanted in a LP from looks, quality and TONE, and I love the Goldtop, but the neck was just to much for me. It was not the overall thickness, just the "shoulders". I had to return it because my hand and forearm was in pain after playing it. It hurt to send it back.

I bit the bullet and bought an R9 on-line today and should get it next week. Its a 2011 Ice Tea burst. Looking forward to getting it next week and hoping it is the one.

Thanks,
PDJ

I bought mine online from Route 66 guitars (it's Ice Tea also). I hope you are as happy with yours, as I am with mine! Don't forget to post NGD pics....

I've been happy with my 2010 R9. But GAS is starting to form, and I don't think it's from those radishes I ate. :D

Thanks Again for the info guys

I'm pretty excited to get mine. It should have shipped on Friday, so I'm hoping to get to get it Tuesday. I'll report back when I get her. I am hoping this cures my my Les Paul gas that I have been experiencing for some time now.
