I have a a V2 Mon Price Stage Right 1x12 combo......snagged for $125.

Its only used at home for low/moderate volume practice and noodling....

So far its a great pick up...

That being said it is what it is....just little bit boxy and a little bit dark ......

Just wondering,.....

The 70/80 isn't terrible but....the bass is a bit broad smearing into the low mids and the top end ?...little bit meh.

Any one out there have a speaker suggestion to tighten up or focus the bottom end and maybe increase frequency response......firm up the attack and articulation....

I'm using multi-fx and stomps for distortion......

Again..... I realize it is a small low wattage combo.....just wondering if I can get just a little more oomph out of it

Thanks....

Probably won't fix boxy in that amp but you could stick a V30 in it. That would give more umph and brighten it up. Speaker would be worth more than the amp then. Maybe just find a used eq pedal

Yeah....V30 maybe way to go.

I have eq's out my ears.....:laugh2:

I'm really splitting hairs on this....the amp sounds pretty good as is....

Just wondering if I can get a hair more out of it.

I've been on the watch for a used GB128......one of my favorite speakers ever

In my opinion the Celestion G12H Anniversary is a perfect speaker for that amp.

I have a Laney VC15 and to my knowledge the Cub12 has the same circuit as the drive channel on VC15 and the Mono Price is a copy. of the Cub12. The VC15 is a combo with a 10" speaker.
I bought a 1x12 cabinet with a Vintage 30 which was an improvement over the stock speaker, but after a while I replaced the speaker with a G12H Anniversary and I never looked back.

The G12H have a nice broad frequency range, is effective and the heavy magnet makes it very tight with clear sweet highs and deep firm lows.

The 70/80 is standard in quite a few amps. It has a light magnet which is what makes it rather loose so to speak (flobby lows) and particular in the Laney/Mono Price since they have no negative feedback.

A V30 won't be a bad choice either, but my ears got tired of listening to it. I is great if you have to cut through a busy mix though

It's an open back combo, they inherently don't have tighter/punchy directional low end. That said, the design is better suited for keeping the amp on the floor and the acoustics of the room come into play even more. You'll probably notice an open back at higher volumes in another room of the house as the low end fills the room, more naturally & ambiently than from the cab itself. Maybe you'll hear the windows rattling from the low end ? Proximity to a wall also matters with open back cabs/combos.

Alternative solution would be to board up the combo back. Not sure how that would effect the tubes for cooling the chassis. From what I see of the back of the combos, partitioning off the speaker from the chassis would be an interesting project & still keep any airflow over the tubes & chassis to avoid overheating the amp. Open back designs are really meant to breathe. The venue is your cabinet, volume matters for room size coverage with the open back type.

I'm a fan of creambacks in small low watt amps.

Regardless of speaker, making sure it gets broken in can make a meh speaker into a keeper.

Totally.....

But I've dealt with the 70/80's before....I've found them to be not terrible, but low's are slightly undefined and highs are meh...??

When I wasn't playing guitar through it I'd grab a five string bass and play walks in different keys at low volume to flex the cone..... Nothing but walks... Watching tv or a movie, walk the dog.... Works for me.... Volume ain't the deal, different λ to flex the paper... Stayed low volume.... Really opened it up....

I just checked, and my main practice amp actually has a V30. I'm not sure now which amp I had creambacks in. I'll be curious to hear how you like the Anniversary.

I actually had a G12H30 years ago.........It was a good speaker.

But I ended up liking an Eminence GB128 just a little better.....great under valued speaker......

I'm also fond of the old Legend V12's.....they thump.

Yes, I usually play at low to medium volume, dime the bass on the amp, and play some simple rhythm on the low strings. Most if not all Celestions take quite some time to break in.
