This is my 2011 Custom I bought new. Always thought it was ebony, but recently found out they started richlite in late 2011. The board is very black, and not washed out or gray like some say richlite is. I also know everyone says that richlite is completely flat with no pores whatsoever. These pics show some pores, but these are absolutely BARELY visible and really only pop out in pics. So it’s either richlite, or really nice ebony. Any help is appreciated. Also..the serial number puts this in the 3000 production range if that helps.

You guys are confirming my hunch. I’m pleased it is ebony, even though I have no disrespect for richlite or anyone who has a guitar with it. I just got a little curious because of how dense it looks and finding out they made some in late 2011 as opposed to the normally quoted start year of 2012.

Where did you hear it was late 2011?

You have ebony. Good to go.

There are little "tells"; the hue when its rubbed, very subtle grain, even how it looks after scraping. And that one was scraped during the finishing / detail process.

You have ebony.

I’ve read on this forum and others that they began some richlite on some production custom shop models. I can’t give you a specific source though.

My experience has been that none were produced in 2011 with richlite.... that there was a small number that was made with ebony in 2012.... roughly 20 plus Les Paul Customs before Gibson could acquire Richlite to build with.

I also heard on this very forum that Gibson discontinued using ebony some time in 2011.

Glad you have the real thing.

So what's the rest of that puppy look like? :naughty: :naughty:

Here’s shots of the rest of the guitar..I swapped the hardware for nickel, and the pickups are Bareknuckle Juggernauts. It may not come across in the pics, but I’m really digging how the binding is starting to yellow. The hand on the back is actually a sticker I made from the handprint of my daughter who passed away from a genetic disorder at six months old. If you look closely she had six fingers, and I thought it was a nice little way to remember her when I play.

Not sure why pics are so terrible on here. They looked great before I uploaded them

Thanks AJK. The pickups sound really good. I play hard rock/metal so it works for me. Tight bass, and really heavy on the mids…I play a Mesa mark series amp which is also mid heavy so I cut the mids a good bit with the sliders. The cleans sound really good also..very versatile pickup.
